**Faster Payments** is the UK's instant bank transfer system. When you pay someone from a UK banking app with their sort code and account number, the money normally goes this way: it leaves your account at once and usually arrives within seconds, any time of day, every day of the year. Pay.UK runs it, and it has been live since 2008. The system takes payments of up to £1 million, but your bank sets a lower limit, often £20,000 to £100,000 a day. In the 12 months to August 2026 it carried 5.86 billion payments.

## How Faster Payments came to the United Kingdom

Faster Payments launched in 2008 so that "anyone with a UK bank account" could pay almost any other UK account "almost instantaneously, 24 hours a day, seven days a week" [[2]](https://www.wearepay.uk/wp-content/uploads/2026/02/Pay.UK-Faster-Payments-System-Principles-v-11-Jan-2026.pdf). A Bacs payment, by comparison, typically takes up to 3 days [[12]](https://www.hsbc.co.uk/current-accounts/what-is-faster-payments/).

**Who can connect.** Since an access programme began in 2014, the number of banks and firms connected directly has "more than tripled". A 2018 rule change let non-banks hold a settlement account at the Bank of England, and the first non-bank joined as a direct participant that year [[1]](https://www.wearepay.uk/what-we-do/payment-systems/faster-payment-system/). Smaller firms connect through a sponsoring bank instead [[2]](https://www.wearepay.uk/wp-content/uploads/2026/02/Pay.UK-Faster-Payments-System-Principles-v-11-Jan-2026.pdf).

**The limit went up.** On 10 February 2022 Pay.UK raised the scheme limit from £250,000 to £1 million a payment, after demand from corporate customers. Each bank still decides how much its own customers can send [[4]](https://newseventsinsights.wearepay.uk/media-centre/press-releases/1-million-faster-payments-now-possible/).

**How use has grown.** These annual totals come from Pay.UK's monthly series. We added up the months for each year [[5]](https://www.wearepay.uk/wp-content/uploads/2026/09/Monthly-Payment-Statistics-from-1990-to-August-2026.xlsx), and the 2025 total matches Pay.UK's own figure [[7]](https://www.wearepay.uk/wp-content/uploads/2026/03/Quarterly-Statistical-Report-2025-Q4.pdf):

| Year | Payments | Value |
|---|---|---|
| 2008 (May–Dec) | 83 million | £33 billion |
| 2010 | 426 million | £164 billion |
| 2015 | 1,247 million | £1,041 billion |
| 2020 | 2,850 million | £2,101 billion |
| 2025 | 5,548 million (+9% on 2024) | £4,838 billion (+14%) |

In the 12 months to August 2026 Faster Payments carried 5,863 million payments, up 9%, worth £5,129 billion, up 11%. One-off "single immediate payments" were 5,039 million of them, about 86%. The rest were payments dated in advance, standing orders and returns [[6]](https://www.wearepay.uk/wp-content/uploads/2026/09/Monthly-Statistics-August-2026.pdf). The busiest month on record was June 2026, with 540 million payments [[6]](https://www.wearepay.uk/wp-content/uploads/2026/09/Monthly-Statistics-August-2026.pdf).

## How to use it

You don't sign up for Faster Payments. It is how your bank sends a payment to another UK account [[12]](https://www.hsbc.co.uk/current-accounts/what-is-faster-payments/).

1. **Send:** in your banking app, online banking, by phone or in a branch, enter the payee's name, sort code and account number, and a reference if they ask for one. Your bank must quote all three details [[2]](https://www.wearepay.uk/wp-content/uploads/2026/02/Pay.UK-Faster-Payments-System-Principles-v-11-Jan-2026.pdf). Before you pay, your bank checks the name against the account with **Confirmation of Payee** [[16]](https://www.wearepay.uk/what-we-do/overlay-services/confirmation-of-payee/).
2. **Wait seconds, not days:** the receiving bank confirms within seconds, and your bank must tell you the result within 15 seconds while you're in the app [[2]](https://www.wearepay.uk/wp-content/uploads/2026/02/Pay.UK-Faster-Payments-System-Principles-v-11-Jan-2026.pdf). HSBC says most payments arrive within seconds, and an occasional one takes up to 2 hours [[12]](https://www.hsbc.co.uk/current-accounts/what-is-faster-payments/). A small share is held for fraud or money-laundering checks before it is sent [[2]](https://www.wearepay.uk/wp-content/uploads/2026/02/Pay.UK-Faster-Payments-System-Principles-v-11-Jan-2026.pdf).
3. **Receive:** give the payer your sort code, account number and the exact name on the account. Banks must accept Faster Payments into current accounts, savings accounts, ISAs, mortgage and loan accounts, and credit card accounts. Your statement shows the date, the amount, the sender's name and their reference [[2]](https://www.wearepay.uk/wp-content/uploads/2026/02/Pay.UK-Faster-Payments-System-Principles-v-11-Jan-2026.pdf).
4. **Regular payments:** standing orders also run on Faster Payments, but only on weekdays outside bank holidays. Banks send at least 90% of them between midnight and 06:00, so the money is there by the start of the working day [[2]](https://www.wearepay.uk/wp-content/uploads/2026/02/Pay.UK-Faster-Payments-System-Principles-v-11-Jan-2026.pdf).

**Hours.** One-off payments can be sent at any time, weekends and bank holidays included [[2]](https://www.wearepay.uk/wp-content/uploads/2026/02/Pay.UK-Faster-Payments-System-Principles-v-11-Jan-2026.pdf). There is no cut-off for the money itself, but the date can change: at NatWest, a payment made after 6.30pm on a weekday, or at a weekend or on a bank holiday, leaves your account immediately and shows the next working day's date [[11]](https://www.natwest.com/support-centre/banking-from-home/make-payments/how-long-will-a-payment-or-transfer-take-to-arrive.html). A payment you set up for tomorrow at Nationwide must be in by 10pm the day before [[8]](https://www.nationwide.co.uk/help/payments/transfer-limits-and-timescales).

**You can't take it back.** Once a payment is in the system it cannot be revoked or recalled [[2]](https://www.wearepay.uk/wp-content/uploads/2026/02/Pay.UK-Faster-Payments-System-Principles-v-11-Jan-2026.pdf). If you paid the wrong account, NatWest tells you to contact the payee and ask for the money back [[11]](https://www.natwest.com/support-centre/banking-from-home/make-payments/how-long-will-a-payment-or-transfer-take-to-arrive.html); banks also have an industry process to try to recover payments sent to the wrong account [[2]](https://www.wearepay.uk/wp-content/uploads/2026/02/Pay.UK-Faster-Payments-System-Principles-v-11-Jan-2026.pdf).

**Who can use it.** Anyone with a UK bank account [[2]](https://www.wearepay.uk/wp-content/uploads/2026/02/Pay.UK-Faster-Payments-System-Principles-v-11-Jan-2026.pdf). Banks set rules for younger customers: NatWest lets 13- to 15-year-olds send up to £30 a day on each of its two payment features, £60 a day in total [[10]](https://www.natwest.com/support-centre/general-banking-information/general/what-are-the-payment-limits.html).

## Limits and fees

The scheme allows up to £1 million a payment [[1]](https://www.wearepay.uk/what-we-do/payment-systems/faster-payment-system/), and each bank sets its own lower limits. HSBC says the limit is "typically up to £25,000 for personal transactions and up to £1 million for business transactions" [[12]](https://www.hsbc.co.uk/current-accounts/what-is-faster-payments/). For personal customers in October 2026:

| Bank | App or online | Telephone | Branch | Fee |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| **NatWest** [[10]](https://www.natwest.com/support-centre/general-banking-information/general/what-are-the-payment-limits.html) | £20,000 per working day (Premier £50,000). One-off "High Value Payment" in the app up to £250,000 | £10,000 | CHAPS for larger amounts | None listed |
| **Lloyds Bank** [[9]](https://www.lloydsbank.com/online-banking/payments-and-transfers/payment-limits.html) | £25,000 a day for most accounts, including payments dated in advance | £25,000 | £250,000 with valid ID | Not listed |
| **Nationwide** [[8]](https://www.nationwide.co.uk/help/payments/transfer-limits-and-timescales) | £100,000 a payment and a day; £25,000 a day to a new or rarely used payee | Not stated | £25,000 a payment | No fee listed for UK payments |
| **HSBC UK** [[12]](https://www.hsbc.co.uk/current-accounts/what-is-faster-payments/) | "Typically up to £25,000" | Not stated | Not stated | "You don't have to pay a fee" |

- **Weekends count forward.** At NatWest, payments made on a Saturday, Sunday or bank holiday count towards the next working day's limit [[10]](https://www.natwest.com/support-centre/general-banking-information/general/what-are-the-payment-limits.html).
- **You can lower your own limit.** NatWest and Lloyds let you set a limit below the maximum in the app, as a guard against scams [[10]](https://www.natwest.com/support-centre/general-banking-information/general/what-are-the-payment-limits.html) [[9]](https://www.lloydsbank.com/online-banking/payments-and-transfers/payment-limits.html).
- **Business accounts.** Pay.UK leaves customer charges to each bank [[2]](https://www.wearepay.uk/wp-content/uploads/2026/02/Pay.UK-Faster-Payments-System-Principles-v-11-Jan-2026.pdf). Lloyds' business tariff calculator lists electronic payments out, Faster Payments included, at "No fee" [[13]](https://www.lloydsbank.com/business/retail-business/current-accounts/tariff-calculator.html). From 1 February 2026 Allica Bank includes 150 outgoing Faster Payments a month in its Business Rewards Account and charges 12p for each one after that [[14]](https://www.allica.bank/business-current-account/february-faqs).
- **What banks pay.** For 2026, Pay.UK's guide puts the central processing fee at an indicative £0.01042 a payment, plus a Pay.UK service fee of £0.00506 [[2]](https://www.wearepay.uk/wp-content/uploads/2026/02/Pay.UK-Faster-Payments-System-Principles-v-11-Jan-2026.pdf).

Limits change; check your bank's current terms.

## Paying shops and businesses

When you pay an invoice by bank transfer, you enter the sort code, account number and reference printed on it, and the payment goes by Faster Payments [(GB report)](https://docs.barcoder.ai/docs/payments/GB). Behind the scenes, banks settle with each other through the Bank of England three times each banking day. Each bank keeps cash prefunded against what it owes, so if one bank fails, the others are still paid [[2]](https://www.wearepay.uk/wp-content/uploads/2026/02/Pay.UK-Faster-Payments-System-Principles-v-11-Jan-2026.pdf).

**Online and in shops.** Pay.UK lists **Open Banking** among the ways a single immediate payment can be started [[2]](https://www.wearepay.uk/wp-content/uploads/2026/02/Pay.UK-Faster-Payments-System-Principles-v-11-Jan-2026.pdf). "Pay by bank" at an online checkout, and the [Open Banking QR](https://docs.barcoder.ai/docs/payments/GB/open-banking-qr) codes some shops and invoices show, both work this way: they hand you to your bank's app, and your bank sends the payment. On 25 June 2026 the Bank of England's Retail Payments Infrastructure Board (RPIB) consulted on "account-to-account payments at the point of sale (as an additional option to card payments)" for the next-generation system. Responses closed on 11 September 2026, and the release gives no delivery date [[19]](https://www.bankofengland.co.uk/news/2026/june/rpib-launches-consultation-on-next-generation-uk-payments-infrastructure).

**Large business payments.** Businesses can send files of Faster Payments direct to the central system through Direct Corporate Access [[2]](https://www.wearepay.uk/wp-content/uploads/2026/02/Pay.UK-Faster-Payments-System-Principles-v-11-Jan-2026.pdf), and NatWest points business customers who regularly pay more than £20,000 to its Bankline service [[11]](https://www.natwest.com/support-centre/banking-from-home/make-payments/how-long-will-a-payment-or-transfer-take-to-arrive.html).

## Paying across borders

Faster Payments is sterling only [[2]](https://www.wearepay.uk/wp-content/uploads/2026/02/Pay.UK-Faster-Payments-System-Principles-v-11-Jan-2026.pdf). You can't use it to pay an account abroad, and it isn't linked to Europe's SEPA instant payments or to any other country's instant system; we found no announced link as of 20 October 2026.

Money from abroad can still arrive by Faster Payments for the last step. Pay.UK's rules cover a "Payment Originating Overseas", drawn on an account outside the UK and sent on by a UK bank or payment firm. The sending firm must mark it with a BIC (a bank identifier code) rather than a sort code, so that the receiving bank can run its sanctions and anti-money-laundering checks [[2]](https://www.wearepay.uk/wp-content/uploads/2026/02/Pay.UK-Faster-Payments-System-Principles-v-11-Jan-2026.pdf). Ordinary international transfers into the UK arrive by SWIFT or SEPA instead [(GB report)](https://docs.barcoder.ai/docs/payments/GB). Nationwide, for example, charges £15 to send most international payments that are not euros to Europe [[8]](https://www.nationwide.co.uk/help/payments/transfer-limits-and-timescales).

## Is there a Faster Payments QR code in the United Kingdom?

**No.** Faster Payments has no QR code, barcode or other visual code of its own. A payment is addressed by **sort code and account number** plus the payee's name [[2]](https://www.wearepay.uk/wp-content/uploads/2026/02/Pay.UK-Faster-Payments-System-Principles-v-11-Jan-2026.pdf), and the UK has no national payment QR standard [(GB report)](https://docs.barcoder.ai/docs/payments/GB).

The QR codes you do meet can end in a Faster Payment, but each belongs to one firm:

- **[Open Banking QR](https://docs.barcoder.ai/docs/standards/open-banking-qr):** a code on a counter or invoice that opens a payment firm's web page, which sends you to your own bank to approve. The code holds a web address, not bank details. See the [Open Banking QR page](https://docs.barcoder.ai/docs/payments/GB/open-banking-qr).
- **[Lloyds Link Pay](https://docs.barcoder.ai/docs/standards/lloyds-link-pay):** a QR code or link that a Lloyds, Halifax or Bank of Scotland customer shows so friends can pay them back. See the [Link Pay page](https://docs.barcoder.ai/docs/payments/GB/lloyds-link-pay).
- **[PayPal QR](https://docs.barcoder.ai/docs/standards/paypal-qr):** shown on a shop's till and scanned with the PayPal app [(GB report)](https://docs.barcoder.ai/docs/payments/GB).

All of these are ordinary [QR Code](https://docs.barcoder.ai/docs/standards/qr-code) symbols with different contents. A UK bill doesn't carry Europe's [EPC QR code](https://docs.barcoder.ai/docs/standards/epc-qr) for bank transfers, and UK shops don't use [EMVCo merchant-presented QR](https://docs.barcoder.ai/docs/standards/emvco-mpm) as a national scheme. A barcode on a UK bill is usually for paying in cash at a PayPoint or Post Office till [(GB report)](https://docs.barcoder.ai/docs/payments/GB).

**The messages behind the payment.** Between banks and the central system, Faster Payments uses **ISO 8583** messages. Pay.UK's January 2026 guide names their fields: the payee's account number is "tag 35 of the ISO8583 message", and the reference is tag 120 [[2]](https://www.wearepay.uk/wp-content/uploads/2026/02/Pay.UK-Faster-Payments-System-Principles-v-11-Jan-2026.pdf). Pay.UK also publishes an ISO 20022 standards library, a "reference source providing information on the recommended conversion of ISO 8583 messages" to ISO 20022, for firms building an ISO 20022 interface to the central system [[3]](https://www.wearepay.uk/what-we-do/payment-systems/faster-payment-system/faster-payment-system-iso20022-standards-library/). We found no date for moving Faster Payments itself to ISO 20022. In December 2025 Pay.UK extended Vocalink's contracts for the current system "into the early 2030s", to give the Bank of England-led RPIB time to design its replacement [[18]](https://www.wearepay.uk/pay-uk-and-vocalink-extend-contracts/). CHAPS, the UK's high-value system, moved to ISO 20022 in June 2023 [[20]](https://www.bankofengland.co.uk/report/2025/rtgs-and-chaps-annual-report-2024-25).

## Safety: being tricked into paying a scammer

Because a Faster Payment is instant and can't be recalled, it is the main tool of **authorised push payment (APP) scams**, where you are talked into sending the money yourself. In 2025, UK Finance counted £576.4 million lost to APP scams, up 19%. Of that, £460.9 million, about 80%, went by Faster Payment, in 486,050 payments [[17]](https://www.ukfinance.org.uk/system/files/2026-06/UK%20Finance%20Fraud%20Report%202026.pdf). **Purchase scams** were 71% of all APP cases: you pay in advance by bank transfer for a car, phone, holiday let or concert tickets that never come. UK Finance says 66% of APP fraud begins online and a further 17% via telecoms [[17]](https://www.ukfinance.org.uk/system/files/2026-06/UK%20Finance%20Fraud%20Report%202026.pdf).

**You are refunded, within limits.** For Faster Payments and CHAPS transfers made since 7 October 2024, the Payment Systems Regulator's rules require your bank to refund an APP scam [[15]](https://www.psr.org.uk/information-for-consumers/app-fraud-reimbursement-protections/):

- up to **£85,000** a claim, if you report it within **13 months**;
- normally within **5 business days**, or 35 business days at most if the bank needs more information;
- minus an optional excess of up to £100, which can't be charged to vulnerable customers;
- not if you were complicit or "grossly negligent", which the regulator calls a high bar.

UK Finance says 88% of in-scope APP losses were reimbursed in the rules' first year [[17]](https://www.ukfinance.org.uk/system/files/2026-06/UK%20Finance%20Fraud%20Report%202026.pdf).

Three rules:

- **Stop when the name doesn't match.** Confirmation of Payee is used by over 300 organisations and makes more than 2 million checks a day [[16]](https://www.wearepay.uk/what-we-do/overlay-services/confirmation-of-payee/). A "no match" warning is your cue to call the payee on a number you already have.
- **Pay sellers you don't know by card or a platform's own checkout,** not by bank transfer. Purchase scams work by moving you off the platform [[17]](https://www.ukfinance.org.uk/system/files/2026-06/UK%20Finance%20Fraud%20Report%202026.pdf).
- **Lower your own limit** in the app if you rarely send large sums [[10]](https://www.natwest.com/support-centre/general-banking-information/general/what-are-the-payment-limits.html).

If you've been scammed, call your bank at once.

## Faster Payments and the alternatives in the United Kingdom

| Way to pay | Best for | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| **Faster Payments** | Paying a person, an invoice, rent; moving money between banks | Instant and 24/7; no personal fee listed at the banks we checked; can't be recalled |
| **[Open Banking QR](https://docs.barcoder.ai/docs/payments/GB/open-banking-qr)** and pay by bank | Paying a shop or invoice without typing bank details | Runs over Faster Payments; you approve in your own bank's app |
| **[Lloyds Link Pay](https://docs.barcoder.ai/docs/payments/GB/lloyds-link-pay)** | Getting paid back by friends | Lloyds, Halifax and Bank of Scotland customers |
| **Bacs Direct Debit** | Regular bills such as council tax and energy | 6,937 million Bacs payments in the 12 months to August 2026 [[6]](https://www.wearepay.uk/wp-content/uploads/2026/09/Monthly-Statistics-August-2026.pdf); covered by the Direct Debit Guarantee [(GB report)](https://docs.barcoder.ai/docs/payments/GB) |
| **CHAPS** | House purchases and other payments above your Faster Payments limit | Run by the Bank of England [[20]](https://www.bankofengland.co.uk/report/2025/rtgs-and-chaps-annual-report-2024-25); HSBC says CHAPS guarantees same-day arrival but charges a fee [[12]](https://www.hsbc.co.uk/current-accounts/what-is-faster-payments/) |
| **Debit card, Apple Pay, Google Pay** | Shops, travel, online | Cards were 64% of UK payments in 2025 [(GB report)](https://docs.barcoder.ai/docs/payments/GB); card payments have their own fraud protections [[15]](https://www.psr.org.uk/information-for-consumers/app-fraud-reimbursement-protections/) |
