Aircash

Aircash is a Croatian prepaid e-money wallet from Aircash d.o.o. in Zagreb, entered in the Croatian National Bank's (HNB) register of e-money institutions on 3 October 2019 [1]. You don't need a bank account. You load it with cash at a Tisak kiosk or an INA petrol station, by card or by bank transfer. You then send money to a phone number, scan the barcode on a bill, pay with a prepaid Aircash Mastercard, or take cash out of a PBZ ATM with a six-digit code [28][5]. From 1 October 2026, cash deposits over €100 in a month trigger a €3 monthly fee [4].

Code on paper? Yes, three kinds: the HUB3 barcode on bills you scan, Abon vouchers with a QR and a 16-digit code, and AircashPay QR codes on webshop checkouts and restaurant bills [7][11][12][13]

Aircash has its own wallet page for the company's history and products across Europe. This page covers using it in Croatia.

How Aircash came to Croatia

Aircash says it began in 2015 in a small Zagreb office [23]. Its first market was online gaming and lottery accounts. When Hrvatska Lutrija and Supersport branches closed in the 2020 lockdown, Aircash says it became "the only logical choice" for deposits and withdrawals [19]. Sources give different dates for the licence. A Telegram.hr interview republished by Aircash says it got its HNB licence in 2017 [22]. The HNB register, the Abon terms (approval 251-020/10-19/BV of 3 Oct 2019) and Aircash's own about page all give 2019 [1][3][6].

Date Step
Mid-2018 15,000 users and a weekly turnover of 250,000 kuna, the founder said in 2019 [18]
3 Oct 2019 Entered in the HNB register as an e-money institution; passported to the EU/EEA on 10 Jun 2020 [1]
Nov 2019 40,000 active users. Poslovni.hr noted that only HT, PBZ Card and Erste Card Club had held such a licence before [18]
Dec 2019 Withdrawals at PBZ ATMs with a six-digit code, no card needed; money from abroad through Ria [20]
Jun 2020 Over 100,000 users in Croatia, up from just under 60,000 before the pandemic [19]
5 Nov 2021 Aircash Mastercard prepaid card launched, sold for 30 kuna at kiosks and petrol stations; over 200,000 users and over 250 million kuna in monthly payments at the time [21]
Nov 2023 Almost 100,000 points of sale and over half a million users in six EU countries [29]
Summer 2024 Over €1 billion in transaction volume; card volume doubled after Apple Pay and Google Pay arrived [22]
Apr 2026 More than 1.5 million users in 15 European markets and more than 200 employees [23]
7 Oct 2026 Free virtual Mastercards, up to five per account [24]

Aircash gives different user counts on different pages. In October 2026 its about page said "1.9+ million active users" in 16+ countries [6]. Its webshop and restaurant pages said over 500,000 and "nearly 500,000" users [12][13]. We found no Croatia-only figure newer than June 2020, and no HNB statistics for Aircash on its own.

How to use it

  1. Sign up. Install the app (App Store, Google Play or Huawei AppGallery). Register with your phone number and email, then verify yourself on video in the app. You photograph both sides of an ID card, a passport or a residence permit and read out a code shown on screen. You can't upload a photo from your gallery, and you can't verify from a computer [5]. You must be of legal age [2]. The account works on one phone number and one device at a time [5].

  2. Top up. Tap Deposit, then choose one of these [5][10]:

    • Cash: generate a deposit code and show it at a partner shop such as Tisak, iNovine, INA or Tifon [28].
    • Card: any Visa, Mastercard, Maestro, Diners, Discover or JCB card that works online.
    • Bank account: copy the IBAN, model and reference number shown in the app into a transfer. Pick "instant" in your bank app for the money to arrive at once.
    • Apple Pay or Google Pay.
    • Abon: buy a paper voucher at a kiosk and scan it (see below).
  3. Send money. Tap Send, pick the recipient's phone number, enter the amount and confirm. The money arrives within seconds. If the number isn't registered and its owner doesn't sign up and claim the money within 72 hours, it comes back to you [5][8].

  4. Receive. Give the sender your phone number. Receiving is free, because the sender pays the 1% fee [9].

  5. Pay a bill. Tap Scan&Pay, scan the barcode or QR code on the bill, change the amount if you want, and confirm. The payee gets the money by the next business day at the latest. Bills without a code can't be paid in the app [7]. You get a PDF confirmation in the app [2].

  6. Take cash out.

    • PBZ ATM: tap Withdrawal → PBZ ATM and enter the amount to get a six-digit code. At a PBZ ATM, press the bottom-right button and type the code. You need no card and no PBZ account [5][25].
    • Partner shop: show the barcode from the app to the cashier [5].
    • Bank account: send the money to your IBAN [5].

Withdrawal codes are valid for 30 minutes [5].

Abon. An Abon is a paper voucher for €5, €10, €20, €25 or €50, sold at kiosks and other partner shops [11]. You need no Aircash account to use one. Type its 16-digit code into a web shop that accepts Abon and the payment goes through at once. Each voucher is used once, for its full value, and you can combine several for one payment [3]. You can also load it into the app: Deposit → Gotovina Abon, then scan the QR code on the voucher or type the 16-digit code [11]. You must be 18 to buy one [3].

Limits and fees

Fees from Aircash's fee page, as of 10 September 2026, for the Croatian market [4]; per-day limits from its FAQ [5]:

The bill fee has changed over time. In 2020 Aircash charged 3.5 kuna per bill [19]. In October 2026 its FAQ said bills were free "until 30.9.2026", while the fee page still showed €0 [5][4]. The terms say a bill-payment fee, when there is one, is listed on the fee page [2].

Abon has its own fees [3]:

  • Maintenance: none in the first month after you buy it, then €4 a month, taken from the voucher's balance.
  • Loading it into the app: 3% for an Abon bought in Croatia.
  • Currency conversion: 2%.
  • Redemption: 7.5% when you cash it out in the cases the terms list.

Spend a voucher soon after you buy it.

The account itself has no fixed limit. Aircash sets starting limits and can change them without giving a reason [2]. Limits change; check the current terms in the app.

Paying shops and businesses

Online. AircashPay is a checkout option. You choose it in a web shop, a QR code appears on the checkout page, and you scan it with the app (or the shop sends you to the app) and confirm with one tap. Shops add it through the WSPay platform or a free Magento plugin [12]. Aircash lists Bambora, Nuvei, TrustPay, WSPay and WooCommerce among its integration partners, and Glovo, Wolt, A1 and PlayStation among the brands that use it [26]. Gaming and betting sites take deposits and pay out winnings to the wallet [19].

Cafés and restaurants. The guest scans the QR code on the bill with the app and confirms. The till then prints a new receipt with Aircash as the payment method. The service comes built into the Remaris till system [13].

At a till. At a shop that takes Aircash, you tell the cashier you'll pay with the app and show the QR code on your screen. The cashier scans it, and you approve the pre-filled payment in the app [2]. Anywhere else that takes cards, use the Aircash Mastercard, physical or in Apple Wallet or Google Wallet. It spends only what is in your wallet [15][23].

Inside the app. The Marketplace sells parking, ENC motorway toll top-ups, Jadrolinija and TP Line ferry and catamaran tickets, bus tickets, car insurance and e-vignettes for nine countries [27].

We found no count of Croatian shops that accept AircashPay.

Paying across borders

  • Licence: the HNB register lists Aircash as providing its services directly in every other EU/EEA state. E-money has been passported since 10 June 2020, and the further payment services added in December 2025 since 27 April 2026 [1].

  • Sending: transfers between Aircash users work "everywhere" [14]. Aircash also pays out to bank accounts in Turkey and Nepal, for a 1% fee, waived until 31 Dec 2026 [4]. The Turkish service was built for people living in Austria and Germany [29].

  • Paying out to a bank: IBANs from Croatia, Slovenia, Austria, Germany, Spain, Cyprus, Greece and Romania [14].

  • Receiving from abroad: anyone can send you money through Ria from 161 countries, and you can take it out at a partner shop [9]. The Ria link started in December 2019 [20].

  • Cash: deposits at partner shops in Croatia, Slovenia, Italy and Romania. Withdrawals at PBZ ATMs in Croatia only, and at partner shops in Croatia, Slovenia and Italy [14]. Abroad, the Mastercard works at any ATM, for the fees listed above [15][4].

  • Bills from other countries: Aircash's sources disagree on which countries' bills Scan&Pay takes:

    Source Countries
Overview page [14] Croatia, Slovenia, Austria
Help page [7] Croatia, Slovenia, Austria, Romania
Fee page [4] Croatia, Slovenia, Austria, Romania, Slovakia

The terms say the service depends on the payee's EU IBAN country [2].

  • Abon abroad: an Abon also pays foreign web shops that accept it, converted to euro for a 2% fee [3].

How the Aircash codes work

Aircash uses several scannable codes. Only one of them, the bill barcode, follows a public standard.

  • The bill you scan: HUB3. A Croatian payment slip (uplatnica, form HUB 3A) carries a PDF417 barcode in its lower-left corner. The barcode holds the payee, IBAN, amount, model and reference. Scan&Pay reads it, so you don't type the payment in. Aircash's help page also says "QR code or barcode" [7]. The terms call it a "2D code on the invoice/payment slip" [2]. The format is on the HUB3 payment page. A QR code on a bill from another SEPA country is usually an EPC QR code, and a Slovenian slip carries a UPN QR. Aircash doesn't say which QR formats Scan&Pay reads.
  • AircashPay QR codes appear on a web shop's checkout page and on restaurant bills, and you scan them with the app [12][13]. At a till it works the other way: the app shows a QR code and the cashier scans it [2]. Aircash has not published the format of these codes. They are read only by the Aircash app or Aircash's merchant systems, not by bank apps.
  • Deposit and withdrawal codes. For a cash deposit the app makes a code that you show at the shop [5]. For a withdrawal it makes a "QR code/barcode/6-digit code" [2]. At a PBZ ATM you type the six digits. Withdrawal codes expire after 30 minutes [5]. The barcode's symbology is not published.
  • The Abon voucher carries a QR code and a 16-digit code. You either scan the QR code into the app or type the digits into a web shop [11][3]. The voucher works like cash: whoever has the code can spend it.
  • The Mastercard has a QR code on its back. You scan it in the app to activate the card [5][21].

Croatia has no national QR code for shops, so an Aircash QR code at a till is Aircash's own. A KEKS Pay QR code is also that app's own and is paid in KEKS Pay (see the Croatia payments overview).

Safety: fake Aircash messages and unrequested codes

Aircash names several scams:

  • Activation codes you didn't ask for. An SMS with an Aircash activation code you didn't request "is a fraud attempt". Ignore it and don't reply. Aircash's customer care never asks for an activation code [17].
  • Look-alike websites and messages. Fake messages use domains such as "aircash-support.com" instead of aircash.eu and push you to "verify now" [16].
  • Fake investment offers and giveaways in Aircash's or Bitpanda's name, which ask you to send money or crypto first [16].

How to protect yourself:

  • Never share a code. That covers SMS codes, your PIN, a withdrawal code and an Abon's 16-digit code. The Abon terms say that nobody, Aircash included, may ask for an Abon's PIN except a web shop at the moment you pay [3]. Treat an Abon like cash, and never buy one to "pay" someone who phoned or messaged you.
  • Check the sender. Real Aircash email comes only from an address ending in @aircash.eu [17].
  • Send money only to people you know. A transfer to the phone number you picked counts as correctly executed, so Aircash is not liable if the number was wrong [2][17].
  • If you're caught: stop paying, change your password, contact Aircash support, and report it to the police. In Croatia you can also report it to HANFA or the HNB [16]. If Aircash doesn't resolve a complaint, you can complain to the HNB [2].

How your money is protected. It is secured under the Electronic Money Act, not under deposit insurance [2]. You can lock a lost Mastercard in the app [15]. We found no CERT or HNB warning specific to Aircash.
