## Overview

**PayMe** is **Hong Kong's most-used P2P mobile-payment app**, operated by **HSBC Hong Kong** and launched **8 February 2017** — making HSBC one of the few single-bank-developed P2P payment products that achieved cross-bank dominance (structurally similar to **[Tikkie QR](https://docs.barcoder.ai/docs/standards/tikkie-qr)** by ABN AMRO in the Netherlands) [2][2], [3][3]. Despite being HSBC-owned, PayMe **works with bank accounts and credit cards from any Hong Kong issuer** — and by April 2026 had **~3.3 million active users** (~44 % of Hong Kong's adult population). The launch was so popular that **HSBC's servers struggled with the demand**, leading media to nickname the service "**Play Me**" during the initial registration surge [2][2].

PayMe's QR-payment layer integrated with **HKMA's Faster Payment System (FPS)** in **July 2019** — meaning users can generate their own **FPS-compatible QR codes** for receiving payments via mobile number, email address, or **anonymous FPS Identifier** [2][2], [3][3]. FPS is Hong Kong's national instant-payment rail (launched September 2018), and PayMe-on-FPS is the canonical Hong Kong P2P pattern. The Hong Kong market also features **WeChat Pay HK** (Tencent) and **Alipay HK** (Ant Group) as primary alternatives — making it one of the most competitive QR-payment markets in the world.

## History

**Background — Hong Kong payment landscape pre-2017** [2][2]:
- **Octopus** — Hong Kong's transit card (since 1997), extended to retail payments; the original cashless rail.
- **No mobile-first P2P app** existed in HK prior to PayMe.
- **HSBC** is the **largest bank in Hong Kong** with ~50 % retail-banking share — uniquely positioned to drive a cross-bank product.

**8 February 2017 — PayMe launches** [2][2]:
- HSBC launches PayMe on iOS/Android.
- **Top-up only from Visa/Mastercard credit cards**, monthly limit HK$10,000.
- **Heavy traffic** meant some users couldn't register — media dubbed the service "**Play Me**" mockingly.
- PayMe over **1.1 million users** by 2018 (FPS launch period).

**April 2018 — FinTech Grand Award** [2][2]:
- PayMe wins the **FinTech Grand Award** in the Hong Kong ICT Awards — official government recognition within ~14 months of launch.

**June 2018 — Bank-account linking added** [2][2]:
- Users can now top up from **local bank accounts** (any HK bank).
- Monthly top-up limit raised to **HK$30,000** (or **HK$50,000** with verified residential address).
- This expanded PayMe beyond HSBC customers to **anyone with any HK bank account**.

**September 2018 — HKMA launches FPS** [2][2]:
- Hong Kong's **Faster Payment System** goes live.
- Real-time inter-bank rail with QR-code-based P2P.
- All major HK banks + stored-value-facility licensees participate.

**July 2019 — PayMe integrates FPS** [2][2], [3][3]:
- PayMe v6.0 launches with **FPS support for transfer and top-up**.
- Complete app redesign.
- Users can now generate their own **FPS QR codes** receivable by any FPS-participating bank or e-wallet (not just PayMe users).
- **Anonymous FPS Identifier** option for privacy-conscious users.

**Subsequent growth** [2][2]:
- Continuous feature expansion: business profiles, in-store QR, scheduled payments.
- **3.3 million active users** by April 2026.

## Technical specification

PayMe is **HSBC's proprietary mobile-wallet** with an **FPS QR overlay** for cross-bank reach [2][2], [3][3]:

| Layer | Description |
|---|---|
| **Operator** | **HSBC Hong Kong** |
| **Regulator** | **HKMA** (Hong Kong Monetary Authority) |
| **Underlying instant rail** | **FPS (Faster Payment System)** — HKMA-operated, launched Sep 2018 |
| **Settlement** | Instant via FPS |
| **Currency** | HKD |
| **Identifiers (FPS)** | Mobile number, email, anonymous FPS Identifier |
| **Top-up sources** | Visa/MC credit cards, any HK bank account |
| **EMVCo compliance** | FPS QR uses standard QR (likely EMVCo-aligned for FPS); PayMe specific format not publicly detailed |

**Two QR flows** [2][2], [3][3]:

1. **PayMe-to-PayMe** (closed loop):
   - Each PayMe user has a personal QR.
   - Scanning → opens PayMe app → completes within HSBC's PayMe rail.

2. **FPS QR (open loop)**:
   - User generates an FPS QR encoding their FPS identifier (mobile / email / anon ID).
   - Scannable by **any FPS-participating bank or wallet** — not just PayMe.
   - This is the **interoperability layer** that lets PayMe users receive money from non-PayMe-user payers (WeChat Pay HK, Alipay HK, any bank app).

**Anonymous FPS Identifier** [2][2]:
- HKMA permits a user to generate an FPS Identifier **without exposing mobile/email** — a privacy-preserving option unusual among national instant-payment rails.

**Top-up limits** [2][2]:
- HK$10K / month — basic (Visa/MC credit card only).
- HK$30K / month — bank-account-linked.
- HK$50K / month — with verified residential address.

## Use cases

**P2P transfers (cardinal use case)** [2][2]: Splitting bills, paying friends — the original PayMe proposition. By 2026, the default Hong Kong P2P channel.

**FPS-mediated cross-app payments** [2][2], [3][3]: A PayMe user generates an FPS QR; a WeChat Pay HK or Alipay HK user scans and pays — interoperability via FPS, not direct PayMe acceptance.

**In-store / merchant payment** [2][2]: Merchants display PayMe / FPS QR; customers pay via PayMe app. Adoption is significant but smaller than WeChat/Alipay HK in retail.

**Bill payments** [3][3]: PayMe supports utility-bill and government-fee payment via FPS.

**Top-up from any HK bank** [2][2]: Since June 2018, PayMe users link any HK bank account for funding — making the wallet effectively bank-agnostic.

## Implementations & ecosystem

**Operator**: **HSBC Hong Kong** — the wholly-owned subsidiary of the global HSBC group.

**Underlying rail**: **HKMA FPS** — operated by Hong Kong Monetary Authority since September 2018.

**FPS participants (~30+ banks and SVF licensees)** [4][4]:
- All major HK banks: HSBC, Hang Seng, Bank of China (HK), Standard Chartered, Bank of East Asia, Citibank HK, ICBC Asia, etc.
- Stored-Value Facility licensees: AlipayHK, WeChat Pay HK, Octopus, TNG Wallet, etc.

**Geographic scope**: **Hong Kong only**.

**No public open-source SDK** for PayMe specifically; FPS QR is the interoperability layer.

## Fun facts

- **"Play Me" nickname**: PayMe's launch day was so popular that **HSBC's servers struggled** — media dubbed the service "Play Me" mockingly. The infrastructure embarrassment quickly converted into brand visibility. (Compare with [UPI QR](https://docs.barcoder.ai/docs/standards/upi-qr)'s many early-launch service issues that similarly drove brand awareness.)
- **Single-bank-developed but cross-bank-used**: PayMe is structurally similar to [Tikkie QR](https://docs.barcoder.ai/docs/standards/tikkie-qr) (ABN AMRO Netherlands) — one bank built a product that works across the whole banking system. Both have **cultural-noun emergence** ("PayMe me HK$50" in Cantonese; "send me a Tikkie" in Dutch).
- **Anonymous FPS Identifier**: HKMA's FPS lets users generate **anonymous QR identifiers** — a privacy feature most peer rails don't offer.
- **Won the FinTech Grand Award** within 14 months of launch — fastest from-launch-to-major-government-award trajectory of any Hong Kong fintech product.
- **3.3M users from a population of ~7.4M** = ~44 % population penetration — high for a market with strong WeChat Pay HK and Alipay HK competition.
- **HK$50K top-up limit requires verified residential address**: A KYC tier system unusual among P2P wallets (most are tier-flat).
- **HSBC's "cross-bank" identity**: HSBC's choice to make PayMe **cross-bank from day 1** reflects its market-leader status — HSBC had more to gain from a payment-rail-with-HSBC-branding than from a closed HSBC-only wallet. Same strategic logic as ABN AMRO with [Tikkie QR](https://docs.barcoder.ai/docs/standards/tikkie-qr).
- **FPS pre-dates and outlasts PayMe**: FPS is HKMA's infrastructure, available to all HK banks/wallets — PayMe is just the most popular consumer-facing app riding on it.
- **No global HSBC equivalent**: HSBC operates retail banking in dozens of markets but has not exported PayMe to any other country. PayMe is uniquely Hong Kong.

## Comparison

| Feature | PayMe (HK) | [Tikkie QR](https://docs.barcoder.ai/docs/standards/tikkie-qr) (NL) | [Bizum](https://docs.barcoder.ai/docs/standards/bizum) (ES) | [WeChat Pay QR](https://docs.barcoder.ai/docs/standards/wechat-pay-qr) (CN) | [Alipay QR](https://docs.barcoder.ai/docs/standards/alipay-qr) (CN) |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Launch | Feb 2017 | 2016 | Oct 2016 | 2013 | 2008 / QR 2011 |
| Operator | HSBC HK (single bank) | ABN AMRO (single bank) | Bizum SL (bank consortium) | Tencent | Ant Group |
| Users (home market) | 3.3M HK (~44 % adults) | n/a (157M txns/yr) | ~24M | 1.3B+ | 1B+ |
| Underlying rail | HKMA FPS | iDEAL / SCT Inst | Iberpay SCT Inst | Proprietary | Proprietary |
| QR interoperability | FPS QR (open) + PayMe (closed) | Universal Dutch bank coverage | EMVCo MPM | Proprietary | Proprietary |
| Cross-border | None | None | None | Cross-border (Alipay+ etc.) | Cross-border |

**Closest peer**: [Tikkie QR](https://docs.barcoder.ai/docs/standards/tikkie-qr) — both single-bank-developed P2P products that achieved cross-bank dominance via universal-acceptance design. HSBC's PayMe and ABN AMRO's Tikkie are **structural twins** in different markets.

**Structural distinction**: PayMe's **FPS interoperability** lets it interoperate with **non-PayMe wallets** (AlipayHK, WeChat Pay HK), while Tikkie operates within the Dutch [iDEAL QR](https://docs.barcoder.ai/docs/standards/ideal-qr) rail ecosystem without equivalent cross-wallet acceptance.

## Status

**Active, dominant in HK P2P** [2][2], [3][3]:
- **3.3 million active users** (April 2026) — ~44 % of HK adult population.
- **Operator**: HSBC Hong Kong.
- **FPS QR interoperability** since July 2019.
- **HK$50K top-up limit** with verified residential address.
- **Cross-app via FPS**: interoperable with all FPS-participating banks/SVF wallets.

**Outlook**: Continued competitive pressure from WeChat Pay HK and Alipay HK; possible feature expansion into business profiles and merchant QR; FPS cross-border integrations (e.g., to mainland China via CIPS) likely to come over the medium term.
