## Overview

**Diners Club International** is a card network, not a wallet or a bank. Despite the slug, there is no US "Diners Club Bank". Diners Club licenses banks and franchise companies to issue its cards: it counts 44 issuers. Its cards are accepted, together with the Discover Network, in more than 185 countries and territories [[2]](https://www.dinersclub.com/about-us/). It belongs to Discover Financial Services, which Capital One bought in May 2025 [[5]](https://www.capitalone.com/about/newsroom/capital-one-completes-acquisition-of-discover/).

Cardholders pay by phone through ordinary phone wallets. In the US, BMO's Diners Club consumer card can be added to Apple Pay, Google Pay and Samsung Pay [[9]](https://dinersclubus.bmo.com/home/consumer-cards/conscards-l2/digital-payments). The Diners Club International app is a travel tool for finding lounges and converting currencies, not a way to pay [[6]](https://itunes.apple.com/lookup?id=474028156&country=us).

## History

- **1949–1950: the lost wallet.** In 1949 the businessman Frank McNamara was dining with clients in Manhattan when he realised he had forgotten his wallet. In 1950 Diners Club launched what it calls the world's first multipurpose charge card [[1]](https://www.dinersclub.com/about-us/history/).
- **1951–1959: growth.** Membership reached 42,000 in 1951. In 1953 businesses in the UK, Canada, Cuba and Mexico agreed to accept the card, making it the first internationally accepted charge card. In 1959 it reached one million members and listed on the New York Stock Exchange [[1]](https://www.dinersclub.com/about-us/history/).
- **1975 and 1984: firsts.** Diners Club introduced the industry's first corporate card programme in 1975 and its first rewards programme, Club Rewards, in 1984 [[1]](https://www.dinersclub.com/about-us/history/).
- **1980: China.** Diners Club says it was the first charge card used in China [[1]](https://www.dinersclub.com/about-us/history/).
- **1981: Citicorp.** Citicorp acquired Diners Club International [[1]](https://www.dinersclub.com/about-us/history/).
- **1 July 2008: Discover.** Discover Financial Services completed its $165 million purchase of the Diners Club International network from Citi. The deal included agreements with 44 network licensees that issue Diners Club cards, with acceptance in 185 countries and territories [[4]](https://www.insidearm.com/news/00017989-discover-completes-diners-club-purchase/).
- **18 May 2025: Capital One.** Capital One completed its acquisition of Discover, and with it the Discover, PULSE and Diners Club International networks [[5]](https://www.capitalone.com/about/newsroom/capital-one-completes-acquisition-of-discover/).
- **2025: 75 years.** Diners Club marked its 75th anniversary [[1]](https://www.dinersclub.com/about-us/history/).

## Ownership & operator

Diners Club International Ltd. owns the Diners Club trademarks [[8]](https://dinersclubus.bmo.com/). It is part of Discover Financial Services, which publishes the Diners Club International app [[6]](https://itunes.apple.com/lookup?id=474028156&country=us). Discover is in turn owned by Capital One Financial Corporation, which said on completing the deal that the Discover, PULSE and Diners Club International networks would join its suite of offerings [[5]](https://www.capitalone.com/about/newsroom/capital-one-completes-acquisition-of-discover/).

Diners Club does not hold the cardholder relationship itself. Issuers hold network participation agreements, and its issuer count includes only franchises with cards in force [[2]](https://www.dinersclub.com/about-us/). In the United States the cards are provided by BMO Bank N.A., Member FDIC [[8]](https://dinersclubus.bmo.com/). The regulator that matters to a cardholder is therefore the local issuer's.

## Technical integration

- **Phone wallets.** BMO's US site lists Apple Pay, Google Pay and Samsung Pay for its Diners Club consumer card. Apple Pay works in shops at contactless terminals, in apps, and in Safari on a Mac where supported [[9]](https://dinersclubus.bmo.com/home/consumer-cards/conscards-l2/digital-payments). That page also says purchases are covered by Mastercard's zero-liability protection, so the US consumer card is a Mastercard-network product [[9]](https://dinersclubus.bmo.com/home/consumer-cards/conscards-l2/digital-payments).
- **Network.** Diners Club and the Discover Network are accepted together in more than 185 countries and territories [[2]](https://www.dinersclub.com/about-us/) [[3]](https://www.dinersclub.com/). The figure is based on Discover's internal transaction data averaged over 2023–2025 [[3]](https://www.dinersclub.com/).
- **The app.** The Diners Club International app, first released on 8 December 2011, finds lounges, converts currencies, calculates tips for over 140 countries and locates ATMs and accepting merchants [[6]](https://itunes.apple.com/lookup?id=474028156&country=us). The Android version is listed on Google Play under the same name [[7]](https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.dci.WebAppTest).
- **Business payments.** The Diners Club site lists card programmes, cardless solutions and business travel for companies [[3]](https://www.dinersclub.com/).

## Users & growth

Diners Club publishes no cardholder count. Its site says the global payment network it belongs to processed $634 billion in transaction volume in 2025, with acceptance at millions of merchants [[2]](https://www.dinersclub.com/about-us/). The footnote attributes that figure to Discover network volume data, so it is not Diners Club's volume alone [[2]](https://www.dinersclub.com/about-us/). The issuer count, 44, is the same as in 2008 [[2]](https://www.dinersclub.com/about-us/) [[4]](https://www.insidearm.com/news/00017989-discover-completes-diners-club-purchase/).

## Use cases

- **Travel and entertainment spending**, its original purpose, and airport lounges: the app lists more than 1,900 lounges and experiences [[1]](https://www.dinersclub.com/about-us/history/) [[6]](https://itunes.apple.com/lookup?id=474028156&country=us).
- **Corporate cards** for companies' travel spending [[1]](https://www.dinersclub.com/about-us/history/) [[3]](https://www.dinersclub.com/).
- **Phone payments** through Apple Pay, Google Pay and Samsung Pay with an issuer's card [[9]](https://dinersclubus.bmo.com/home/consumer-cards/conscards-l2/digital-payments).

## Implementations & partners

- **Issuers (franchises).** Local banks or card companies run Diners Club in each market, often with their own apps. App Store publishers include Banco Diners Club del Ecuador (blu de Diners Club), Diners Club Peru, The Standard Bank of South Africa and FD Diners Club International MAK A.D. [[10]](https://itunes.apple.com/search?term=diners+club&entity=software&country=us&limit=10). Banco Diners Club del Ecuador is a real Diners Club bank, and a better candidate for a wallet bio than this network page.
- **United States.** BMO Bank N.A. issues the cards [[8]](https://dinersclubus.bmo.com/). On 20 October 2026 its site said that applications for the Diners Club Card Elite and Premier were temporarily unavailable [[8]](https://dinersclubus.bmo.com/).
- **Networks.** Diners Club shares acceptance with the Discover Network [[2]](https://www.dinersclub.com/about-us/). See [Discover Financial Services](https://docs.barcoder.ai/docs/wallets/discover-financial) and [Capital One](https://docs.barcoder.ai/docs/wallets/capital-one).

## Fun facts

- Diners Club dates its origin to a forgotten wallet at McNamara's 1949 dinner in Manhattan [[1]](https://www.dinersclub.com/about-us/history/).
- In 1974, Diners Club says, five out of six tourists entering the US with a credit card carried a Diners Club card [[1]](https://www.dinersclub.com/about-us/history/).

## Comparison

Diners Club competes with other card networks, such as [American Express](https://docs.barcoder.ai/docs/wallets/amex) and [JCB](https://docs.barcoder.ai/docs/wallets/jcb-card), not with wallets. For a cardholder the choice is about the issuer's card and its travel benefits; how they pay by phone is the same for every network, through Apple Pay, Google Pay or Samsung Pay [[9]](https://dinersclubus.bmo.com/home/consumer-cards/conscards-l2/digital-payments).

## Status

Active as a network. Its site cites issuer and acceptance data from 2025 [[2]](https://www.dinersclub.com/about-us/), and the app was last updated on 21 September 2026 [[6]](https://itunes.apple.com/lookup?id=474028156&country=us). In the US, BMO's consumer card applications were unavailable when read on 20 October 2026 [[8]](https://dinersclubus.bmo.com/).
