AlipayHK
AlipayHK is the Hong Kong version of Alipay. It is a Hong Kong dollar e-wallet run by Alipay Financial Services (HK) Limited, which holds stored value facility (SVF) licence SVF0004 from the Hong Kong Monetary Authority (HKMA), effective since 25 August 2016 [1]. You sign up with a Hong Kong mobile number. To pay, you show your Payment Code or scan the shop's QR code. You can also take the MTR with the EasyGo QR code, send money over FPS, and pay in HKD at mainland shops that show the Alipay or Alipay+ logo [5][11]. If you want to spend your balance across the border, verify your HKID first [9].
| Country | Hong Kong (HK); it also pays in Macao, on the mainland and abroad [16] |
| What it is | A stored value facility (e-wallet) regulated by the HKMA. It is not a bank account [1][2] |
| Who runs it | Alipay Financial Services (HK) Limited, 22/F Tower One, Times Square, Causeway Bay (licence SVF0004) [1]. The brand belongs to Alipay Payment Services (HK) Limited, a joint venture of Ant Group and CK Hutchison [2] |
| Since | Licence effective 25 Aug 2016 [1]; the wallet launched in May 2017, according to the operator [4] |
| Cost | Free to pay, top up from a bank, transfer from balance and withdraw. Credit cards cost extra above monthly waiver limits: 1.5% to 4% on transfers, 2.5% in shops [6][7][9] |
| Typical limit | Balance capped at HK$3,000 until you verify, then HK$100,000. Transfers are capped at HK$20,000 a day on a fully verified account [6] |
| Reaches | Any FPS account in Hong Kong; shops on the mainland, in Macao, Japan, South Korea and Singapore; remittances to the mainland, the Philippines and Indonesia [6][16][17] |
| Code on paper? | Yes. Merchants display QR codes for you to scan. Water, tax and rates bills carry an FPS QR code that AlipayHK reads [9][18] |
AlipayHK has its own wallet page for the company and its products. Its banking partner has one too: Ant Bank (Hong Kong). This page covers using AlipayHK in Hong Kong.
How AlipayHK came to Hong Kong
The licence came first. The HKMA's register lists Alipay Financial Services (HK) Limited with licence SVF0004, effective 25 August 2016. WeChat Pay Hong Kong's licence, SVF0005, has the same effective date [1]. In March 2018 the operator said the wallet had launched in May 2017. CK Hutchison and Ant Financial had announced their joint venture on 26 September 2017 [4].
| Date | Step |
|---|---|
| 25 Aug 2016 | SVF licence SVF0004 takes effect [1] |
| May 2017 | Wallet launched, according to the operator [4] |
| 26 Sep 2017 | CK Hutchison and Ant Financial announce the joint venture behind AlipayHK [4] |
| Mar 2018 | Over 1 million users and 10,000 points of sale; accepted in wet markets, some MTR stations, taxis and at Wong Tai Sin Temple [4] |
| 2018 | EasyGo launched, which AlipayHK calls Hong Kong's first QR payment built for public transport [11] |
| 28 Jan 2019 | EasyGo on green minibus routes 8 and 8X, the first mobile payment on a Hong Kong minibus [12] |
| 1 Nov 2019 | Water Supplies Department, Inland Revenue Department and Rating and Valuation Department bills carry an FPS QR code you can scan in AlipayHK [18] |
| 23 Jan 2021 | QR code gates at all 93 MTR heavy rail stations (Airport Express stations excepted); AlipayHK is the only wallet for the first 12 months [13][14] |
| 4 Nov 2022 | Ant Bank PayLater launches in AlipayHK as a trial [26] |
| 1 Sep 2023 | Credit card payments in shops get a monthly fee waiver limit [9] |
| 1 Jan 2025 | AlipayHK joins the government's Public Transport Fare Subsidy Scheme [15] |
| Apr 2025 | "Over 4.2 million residents in Hong Kong" and over 150,000 local retail outlets [25] |
| 2025 | AlipayHK NFC with Mastercard, starting on Android in the transport sector [11] |
| 30 Jul 2025 | Mainland's cross-border QR unified gateway goes live, with AlipayHK (支付寶香港) among its partners [24] |
The MTR date depends on the source. AlipayHK's transport page puts its MTR gate launch in 2019 [11]. MTR's own announcement, reported in January 2021, gives 23 January 2021 for QR code payment across the heavy rail network [13][14]. The 2018 operator release already mentions "designated MTR stations", but as shops that took AlipayHK, not as gates [4].
Usage. We found no HKMA figure for AlipayHK on its own. Operator figures over time: over 1 million users in March 2018 [4], and over 4.2 million Hong Kong residents in April 2025 [25]. In October 2026 its website gave "over 150,000 partner merchants" [3]. Over the 2025 Lunar New Year, AlipayHK reported almost 30% more transactions in Hong Kong than a year earlier. It said its users' spending in mainland cities beyond Guangdong, such as Shanghai and Beijing, had more than doubled [27].
How to use it
- Sign up. Install AlipayHK from the App Store, Google Play or the official APK. Tap Create Account, enter a Hong Kong mobile number and type in the SMS code [5][10]. The app asks you for a login password and then a payment password [10]. You can't register a recycled mobile number that is still tied to an active account [10].
- Verify your identity. Everyday payments work without ID [8], but most of the useful features need it. Go to the menu, choose Identity Verification, photograph your HKID card and take a live selfie [8]. The ID must be the original, valid for at least six more months. Verification usually takes 5 working days [8]. There are three levels: unverified, Intermediate and Advanced. "HKID scanning and live selfie" unlocks the highest limits [6].
- Without the HKID scan. Accounts registered on or after 1 September 2021 can't use their balance for Taobao, transfers, Lucky Money, cross-border payments or remittances [8]. The cross-border transport code also needs it [9].
- No HKID? ID scanning works only with an HKID. A holder of another ID can keep Intermediate level by linking a bank account in the same name [8].
- Top up. Choose one of these [5][7]:
- FPS: copy your wallet's FPS ID from the account page and send money to it from any Hong Kong bank app. It arrives at once.
- Linked bank account or online banking.
- A credit card: Visa or Mastercard, including some cards issued outside Hong Kong.
- Cash at a shop: show your top-up barcode at 7-Eleven, Circle K, Watsons, Fortress, McDonald's or ParknShop. The first cash top-up is at least HK$100, later ones at least HK$50, always in multiples of HK$50.
- The HKMA Coin Cart: show your top-up QR code. Any amount from HK$1.
- Pay in a shop. Tap Payment on the home screen to show your Payment Code, and choose to pay from your balance, a linked bank account or a credit card. Either the cashier scans your code, or you tap Scan and read the merchant's QR code [5]. Most key merchants scan your code; where a shop displays its own code, you scan that instead [9]. You can also add AlipayHK to Apple Wallet and tap your iPhone on a contactless reader [3].
- Send money. Tap Transfer, then pick a payee or enter a phone number or bank account number. Choose FPS to pay into any bank or wallet, or send a link by WhatsApp or SMS. Enter the amount and your payment password [6].
- Cancelling: FPS and instant transfers can't be cancelled. A link the payee hasn't accepted within 24 hours comes back to you.
- Alipay China: transfers go only to AlipayHK accounts, not to Alipay China [6].
- Receive. Register under Settings → FPS Addressing Service so that people can pay you by FPS. Receiving costs nothing [6].
- Pay a bill. Open Bill Payment and pick the merchant. For a government bill, tap Scan and read the QR code printed on it [18]. You can link a bill and switch on auto-debit. AlipayHK lists more than 60 billers and 90 charities [19].
- Withdraw. Cash your balance out to HSBC, Hang Seng, Bank of China (Hong Kong), Standard Chartered, Citibank (Hong Kong), Bank of East Asia, ICBC (Asia) or Dah Sing Bank. You need Intermediate verification or above. You can withdraw up to 10 times a day, and the money takes four business days [7].
Limits and fees
Limits come from AlipayHK's FAQ pages, read 21 October 2026 [6][7][9]. They depend on your verification level:
| Unverified | Intermediate | Advanced / HKID scan and selfie | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Balance you can hold | HK$3,000 | HK$100,000 | HK$100,000 |
| Paying from balance (Hong Kong) | HK$3,000 a payment, HK$25,000 a year | HK$5,000 a payment, HK$100,000 a year | No limit per payment or per year |
| Paying from a linked bank account | Not stated | HK$10,000 a payment, HK$10,000 a day | HK$20,000 a payment, HK$20,000 a day |
| Transfers | HK$3,000 a day, HK$25,000 a year | HK$10,000 a day, HK$100,000 a year | HK$20,000 a day, HK$100,000 a month, HK$1,200,000 a year |
| Cash top-up at shops | HK$3,000 a day, HK$10,000 a month, HK$25,000 a year | HK$5,000 a day, HK$30,000 a month, HK$100,000 a year | HK$5,000 a day, HK$30,000 a month, HK$200,000 a year |
| Cross-border payment from balance | Needs the HKID scan | HK$5,000 a payment, HK$100,000 a year | HK$50,000 a payment, no yearly limit |
| Remittance and Cross-border Lucky Money | Not available (Intermediate or above needed [17]) | HK$7,999 a day, HK$100,000 a year | HK$7,999 a day, HK$300,000 a year |
The FAQ isn't consistent with itself. Its Lucky Money answers give different balance-payment limits from the payment section: HK$10,000 a payment, and HK$20,000 or HK$30,000 a day [6]. The cross-border guide says that "top-up limits depend on your verification level" and that the limits in the app apply [5].
| Operation | Fee |
|---|---|
| Top-up by cash at a shop or from a bank account | Free [7] |
| Top-up by credit card | 1.5% for Bank of China, UnionPay and Standard Chartered cards issued locally; 2.5% for other Visa/Mastercard [7] |
| Paying in a shop or online by Visa/Mastercard | Free up to HK$3,000 a month, then 2.5%. Free from balance, a bank account, Ant Bank, and Bank of China, Hang Seng or Standard Chartered cards issued in Hong Kong (since 1 Sep 2023) [9] |
| Transfer from balance, bank account or Ant Bank eM+ | Free [6] |
| Transfer by credit card | From 1 Oct 2024: 1.5% with Bank of China, Standard Chartered or Hang Seng cards, 4% with other cards. Below a monthly waiver of HK$500 (unverified) or HK$1,000 (verified), some cards transfer free [6] |
| Receiving money | Free [6] |
| Withdrawal to a bank | Free [7] |
| Paying your credit card bill in the app | HK$2 from balance or Ant Bank eM+, 0.3% from a bank account [9] |
| EasyGo fares | No transaction fee [9] |
| Cross-border payments | No AlipayHK fee "on selected payment methods"; your bank or card issuer may charge [5] |
| Cross-border Lucky Money | Free; RMB 50–520 each [6] |
Limits change; check the current figures in the app before a large payment or a trip.
Paying shops and businesses
- In Hong Kong. Over 150,000 local outlets accept AlipayHK, including chain stores, convenience stores, supermarkets, wet markets and restaurants [2][25].
- Taxis. A taxi driver can take payment with a merchant code, which AlipayHK says costs the driver no transaction fee [11].
- Online. You can pay Google Play, YouTube, the App Store and iTunes from your balance or a bank account, with no AlipayHK fee [9]. Merchants can add AlipayHK as an online checkout, which also takes money from mainland Alipay wallets [34].
- Paying in instalments. Ant Bank PayLater runs inside AlipayHK. It launched on 4 November 2022 as a trial with 3-month instalments on online purchases of HK$100 or more. Taobao, HKTVmall, Watsons and UNIQLO were among the first merchants [26].
- Rewards. A. Point gives 1 point for every HK$1 spent, and you can spend the points as cash at checkout [35].
Transport. EasyGo takes you through gates on these services [9][15]:
- the MTR heavy rail lines and the Airport Express;
- Citybus, KMB, Long Win and New Lantao buses;
- the tram and the Star Ferry;
- some green minibus routes and some ferry routes.
Light Rail, MTR Buses and red minibuses aren't covered [15].
MTR fares are charged at the Octopus fare [9]. The government's $2 scheme for the elderly and the MTR Student Travel Scheme don't work with it [15]. Under the Public Transport Fare Subsidy Scheme, AlipayHK refunds one-third of your monthly single-journey fares above HK$500, up to HK$400 a month. The subsidy lands in your balance from the 16th of the next month, and you have three months to collect it. Fares you pay by AlipayHK NFC or Apple Wallet don't count towards it [15].
Paying across borders
- The mainland. Any shop showing the Alipay or Alipay+ logo accepts AlipayHK [5]. That includes shopping centres, street stalls, ride-hailing and power-bank rentals. You pay in HKD at the rate the app shows, and your HKD amount appears in Transaction History [5].
- Macao, Japan, South Korea, Singapore. On the Payment Code screen, tap Overseas via Alipay+ to switch to an overseas code. AlipayHK names PayPay in Japan and ZeroPay in Korea as networks that accept it [5]. In April 2026 it claimed:
- nearly 90% of Macao merchants;
- over one million outlets in Japan;
- more than 120,000 merchants in South Korea;
- "selected merchants" in Singapore [16].
- Ride-hailing through DiDi, Amap and Grab in 46 countries, settled in HKD [5].
- The mainland's unified gateway. On 30 July 2025 the mainland opened a unified gateway for cross-border QR payments, built by the Payment & Clearing Association of China and UnionPay under the People's Bank of China. AlipayHK (支付寶香港) is among its partners, alongside WeChat Pay HK and Macao's MPay [24].
- Remittance. Send money to a mainland Alipay account or bank account, which arrives in as little as 15 minutes. You can also send to the Philippines (GCash, bank, or cash pickup at Cebuana or Palawan) and to Indonesia [17]. The newer shoppers page lists only the mainland and the Philippines [3].
- Proof of funds. Remittances to the mainland must be for one of the listed purposes, such as your salary or family support, and Alipay may ask for payslips or proof of relationship [6]. In January 2026 users reported transfers of HK$2,000 blocked until they declared where the money came from. AlipayHK said the receiving institution assesses risk in real time [28].
- Payment Connect. Payment Connect links FPS with the mainland's payment system. AlipayHK is not on it: the HKMA's list of Hong Kong participants (revised 8 September 2026) includes Ant Bank and WeChat Pay Hong Kong, but not AlipayHK. The northbound limit there is HK$10,000 a day and HK$200,000 a year per person per institution [23]. Ant Bank, whose Mini App runs inside AlipayHK [25], is on the list [23].
How the AlipayHK codes work
AlipayHK reads and shows several kinds of code. Only one has a published format.
- Your Payment Code is a QR code the cashier scans. The code you generate while online also works offline for a limited time, then needs a connection to refresh [9]. Abroad, Overseas via Alipay+ shows a different code [5]. Neither format is published.
- Merchant QR codes are the codes you scan. Hong Kong's common merchant code, HKQR, is the HKMA working group's "Common QR Code Specification" (version 1.0, December 2017). It is built on the EMVCo merchant-presented QR specification, so one sticker can carry several payment schemes [20][22]. The implementation guideline took effect on 17 September 2018. It expects payment providers, SVF licensees among them, to be able to scan HKQR codes [21]. AlipayHK's own pages don't say which merchant formats its scanner reads.
- On the mainland, the codes at counters with the Alipay logo are Alipay's own (Alipay QR), which you scan or which scan you [5]. That format is proprietary and not published.
- Bills. Since 1 November 2019, water, tax and rates bills have carried an FPS QR code that you scan with Scan [18]. The FPS payment page covers FPS and its codes.
- EasyGo is a dynamic, encrypted QR code that a gate or bus reader scans. It needs your phone's clock to be right, and it can refresh offline only a limited number of times [9]. AlipayHK says a payment takes 0.3 seconds, and that you can travel first and pay later, so a weak signal or a low balance doesn't stop you at the gate [12]. The format isn't published.
- Top-up and coupon codes. You show a top-up barcode at shops and a QR code at the Coin Cart [7]. Coupons appear as a QR code or barcode at the till [9].
AlipayHK also pays without a code: you can tap with NFC through Mastercard (on Android, from 2025) or use Apple Pay [3][11].
Safety: fake AlipayHK texts, calls and sites
The common scam impersonates AlipayHK:
- Fake websites. In February 2024 the HKMA published dozens of fake AlipayHK domains and sender addresses from emails reported by the licensee [32].
- Fake "#" texts. In February 2025 AlipayHK said police had arrested people suspected of sending fake "#" texts that linked to a look-alike site [31].
- Fake customer service. In September 2025 AlipayHK warned of calls, SMS and WhatsApp messages from scammers posing as its customer service [30]. Its website warns of fake one-time passwords sent from fake mobile base stations [3].
Three rules from AlipayHK and the HKMA:
- AlipayHK never sends you a link. It won't text or email you to ask for your login, a password reset or a payment [29][33]. Its customer service doesn't call you unless you contacted it first, and it doesn't send one-time login passwords [3]. The only website is alipayhk.com, and you should install the app only from the official stores [33].
- Freeze first. If you lose your phone or gave your details away, freeze the account in the app's User Security Centre or on alipayhk.com. Freezing stops payments and transfers at once [30][33].
- Then report it. Contact the SVF licensee and report to the police, or call the Anti-Deception Coordination Centre on 18222 [32].
Also check a transfer before you confirm it. FPS and instant transfers can't be cancelled. If you send money to the wrong account, AlipayHK will contact the payee, but it suggests the police if the payee won't return it [6].
AlipayHK and the alternatives in Hong Kong
