WeChat Pay HK

WeChat Pay HK is the Hong Kong-dollar wallet inside the WeChat app. It is run by WeChat Pay Hong Kong Limited, a Tencent company that holds HKMA stored value facility (SVF) licence SVF0005. You get it by registering WeChat with a Hong Kong mobile number and opening "Me" → "Payments & Services". From there you can scan QR codes to pay in Hong Kong and Macau, go through MTR gates, send red packets and make FPS transfers. You can also pay mainland Chinese merchants in HKD, down to taxis and street stalls, with the RMB price converted in the app. Payments are free for buyers. Credit-card payments carry a 2% fee once they pass HK$100,000 in a calendar year.

Country Hong Kong (HK); also used in Macau, the Chinese mainland and Japan [2]

This page is about paying with WeChat Pay HK in Hong Kong and across the border. The wallet's history and company background are on the WeChat Pay HK wallet page. The code itself is described on WeChat Pay QR.

How WeChat Pay HK came to Hong Kong

WeChat Pay first reached Hong Kong as a payment method for mainland tourists. In August 2017 Tencent told Caixin that more than 900 7-Eleven stores in Hong Kong had begun accepting WeChat Pay. At the time, the offshore service was "only for people with mainland bank accounts" [17]. The Hong Kong-dollar wallet is a separate product with its own licence.

Date What happened
25 Aug 2016 Money Data Limited, now WeChat Pay Hong Kong Limited, receives SVF licence SVF0005. AlipayHK's operator gets SVF0004 the same day [1]
Dec 2017 WeChat Pay Hong Kong is one of the working-group members behind the HKMA's Common QR Code Specification [20]
17 Sep 2018 The HKMA launches FPS, which links banks and SVF wallets on one platform. Transfers start on 30 September [19]
Oct 2018 Hong Kong users can pay mainland platforms such as Didi, Meituan-Dianping and the 12306 rail site in HKD, over UnionPay's network [16]
Feb 2022 The MTR starts accepting WeChat Pay for QR-code tickets "from Sunday", per The Standard on Monday 14 February (so 20 February) [11]
14 Jan 2024 Citybus accepts WeChat Pay HK and mainland WeChat Pay on all routes, including Cityflyer airport and cross-border buses [12]
Apr 2024 The mainland merchant network covers all cities in China, online and offline [14]. Metro and bus rides work in 15 mainland cities [13]
Jan 2025 Coverage extends to small and micro mainland merchants, including Shenzhen taxis [15]
22 Jun 2025 Payment Connect (FPS ↔ mainland IBPS) goes live [8]
30 Jul 2025 The mainland's cross-border QR unified gateway goes into production. 微信香港 (WeChat HK) is listed among its partners [21]

22 Apr 2026 au PAY merchants in Japan accept WeChat Pay HK [25]

WeChat Pay HK doesn't publish user or transaction numbers, and the HKMA's SVF statistics are not broken down by licensee. We found no reproducible current user count.

How to use it

  1. Open the wallet. Register WeChat with a Hong Kong mobile number, then go to "Me" → "Payments & Services". That is the HKD wallet [2]. There is no separate app.
  2. Verify your identity. The wallet has three levels: unverified, bank-account verified and face-recognition verified. HSBC's August 2025 FAQ says bank-account verification no longer takes new applications [4]. Before you pay on the mainland, Sing Tao's guide says to complete "身份認證" (identity verification) or link a Hong Kong bank account or credit card [18]. The terms require true and accurate information, and the operator may check it and obtain credit reports [3].
  3. Fund it. Link a Hong Kong credit card or bank account (up to 10 cards [4]), or top up the balance. To top up by FPS, register your Hong Kong mobile number for FPS in the wallet. In your bank app, send to that number and pick "[931] WeChat Pay Hong Kong Limited", or "Default bank" if WeChat Pay HK is your default FPS recipient [6].
  4. Pay a shop. Scan the merchant's code, or show your payment code for the till to scan. Mini-program, in-app, website and authorised-deduction payments also work [2].
  5. Send and receive. Send red packets in a chat, and make FPS transfers to Hong Kong bank accounts [2]. Anyone can pay you through FPS from any bank, using the mobile number you registered [6]. A P2P transfer always asks for your payment password [3].
  6. Send to the mainland. Use "Transfer to Chinese Mainland" (Payment Connect). The money arrives in a mainland bank account in real time, in HKD or RMB [9]. You can address it by mainland mobile number or account number, and only personal accounts can receive [7].

Who can use it. You need a Hong Kong mobile number [2]. Payment Connect transfers north are for holders of a Hong Kong Identity Card [7]. A mainland visitor without a Hong Kong number keeps using mainland WeChat Pay (微信支付) in Hong Kong. The MTR and Citybus accept both wallets, and mainland users pay Citybus fares in RMB [10] [12].

Limits and fees

Spending limits depend on how far you have verified your account. These are the figures in HSBC's FAQ of August 2025, which warns that WeChat's own information takes precedence [4]:

Account status Spending in Hong Kong, per calendar year Mainland, per payment Mainland, per calendar year
Not verified HK$25,000 HK$10,000 HK$25,000
Bank-account verified (closed to new users) HK$100,000 HK$20,000 HK$100,000
Face-recognition verified No cap HK$38,000 HK$400,000

The unverified mainland limits match what Caixin reported in 2018: HK$25,000 in total and HK$10,000 a transaction for users who had not registered personal information [16].

Other limits and fees Amount
Top-ups, all channels together HK$10,000 a month and HK$100,000 a year. Dah Sing's own cap on top-ups from its accounts is HK$1,500 a day and HK$5,000 a month (Dah Sing FAQ, "set by WeChat Pay and may change") [5]
Maximum balance HK$100,000 for users who have registered personal information [5]
Payment Connect, north HK$10,000 a day and HK$200,000 a year per person, for each participating institution, 24x7 [7]
Payment Connect, south Mainland residents' USD 50,000 annual foreign-exchange quota; mainland service hours 7:00 to 23:00 [7]
Paying as a buyer Free at present. The operator may introduce fees and will announce them in the app [3]
Paying by credit card No fee up to HK$100,000 a calendar year in Hong Kong and the mainland combined, then 2% [4]. Linking a card is free [4]
FPS and Payment Connect transfers No handling fee [2] [9]
Mainland spending in HKD No handling fee for the RMB-to-HKD conversion, per the operator [15]
Withdrawing your balance You can redeem it at any time. The operator may charge a handling fee [3]

Your card issuer can still charge its own currency or transaction fees when you pay in a foreign currency [3]. The wallet's own HKD price uses historical exchange rates, not real-time ones [3].

Limits change; check the wallet's current terms in the app.

Paying shops and businesses

  • In Hong Kong and Macau: the operator claims coverage of "all online and offline merchants" and shows its logo at accepting shops [2].
  • Bills: telecom, water, electricity, gas and property-management bills. You can also scan and pay government charges such as tax, Government Rent and Housing Authority bills with a credit card [2].
  • Transport: the WeChat Transit QR Code opens MTR heavy-rail gates, including the Airport Express. QR-code fares equal the Octopus fare for the passenger type you select, and other fare promotions don't apply. The "Companion Code" lets a second rider enter from the same phone [10]. On Citybus you scan your payment code, and you press a button on the reader first for child or elder fares [12].
  • Fare subsidy: the government's Public Transport Fare Subsidy Scheme counts MTR rides paid with AlipayHK EasyGo only. WeChat Transit QR Code rides don't count [10].
  • Online: Taobao, Pinduoduo and JD in HKD, with free shipping to Hong Kong [2].
  • Quick Pay: when the till scans your code, the payment goes through without a password. The operator may cap how often and how much you pay this way [3].

Paying across borders

  • Mainland China, in HKD. Since October 2018 the wallet has paid mainland platforms over UnionPay [16]. Since April 2024 its mainland network covers all cities [14]. Since January 2025 small merchants and taxis take it too, with nothing to set up on their side. You scan the vendor's ordinary payment code, type the RMB amount, and confirm the HKD equivalent [15].
  • Mainland metro and buses. Ride-code mini-programs work in 15 cities, including Shenzhen and Shanghai. You verify with your Hong Kong number and mainland travel permit, and fares are converted to HKD with no extra fee (The Standard, April 2024) [13].
  • Transfers to mainland bank accounts. Payment Connect has run since 22 June 2025 [8]. WeChat Pay Hong Kong Limited is the only non-bank among 26 Hong Kong participants on the HKMA list of 2 September 2026 [7]. Fintech News Hong Kong reported its launch on 3 March 2026, with HSBC settling the HKD side through FPS [9]. The HKMA list doesn't say whether a WeChat Pay HK wallet can receive southbound transfers from the mainland; check in the app.
  • Cross-border QR gateway. The gateway is run by the Payment and Clearing Association of China and UnionPay, and its rules go only to participants. 微信香港 (WeChat HK) was listed as a partner in September 2025 [21], but what it carries for WeChat Pay HK isn't public. See Unified Cross-Border QR.
  • Macau and Japan. Macau is a supported region [2]. From 22 April 2026 you can scan au PAY merchant QR codes across Japan, connected through Evonet [25].
  • Money abroad. Since November 2025 Thunes has carried real-time transfers to corridors including Southeast Asia, Europe and Australia [22]. We didn't find a fee schedule.

How the WeChat Pay HK codes work

WeChat Pay HK uses the same code system as mainland WeChat Pay. A merchant shows a WeChat Pay QR code that you scan, or you show your own payment code (the terms say "QR code (or bar code)") for the till to scan [3]. Mainland personal payment codes accept HKD from the wallet without any change [15]. The code format is Tencent's own and is not publicly documented; see WeChat Pay QR.

  • At the MTR the gate reads a WeChat Transit QR Code that you select in WeChat, with a passenger type set for each journey [10]. Its format is not published.
  • Hong Kong's shared QR code (HKQR). It is a different code: the HKMA's Common QR Code Specification of December 2017, built on EMVCo's merchant-presented QR. ID 26 is reserved for FPS, and WeChat Pay Hong Kong Limited sat on the working group that wrote it [20]. See EMVCo MPM and the FPS page. We found no WeChat Pay HK source saying that the wallet scans FPS QR codes. Its FPS use is by mobile number.
  • On a bill, a QR code next to a "WeChat Pay" logo is a WeChat Pay code. An FPS or HKQR code is paid from a bank app or an FPS wallet. The operator says you can scan government bills in WeChat to pay by credit card [2], but it doesn't say which code those bills carry.

Safety: fake WeChat customer service and fake SMS

WeChat Pay HK has warned about two scams. In the first, callers pose as Weixin customer-service staff, ask you to share your screen and give personal information, and talk you into transferring money (24 May 2024) [24]. In the second, SMS messages from a fake "We Remit" sender ID, or claims that "Million-Dollar Protection", "WeSure" or "Tencent Insurance" has expired, push you to a phishing link or a fake hotline (5 September 2024) [23].

  • Hang up on screen-sharing and transfer requests. WeChat Pay HK never asks you to share your screen, never asks you to move money, and doesn't call by FaceTime. Its staff call only from 3929 1555; to check a call, ring 3929 1666 [24].
  • Trust only registered SMS senders. WeChat and WeChat Pay HK send SMS from the registered IDs #WeChat and #WeChat Pay under OFCA's SMS Sender Registration Scheme, and they have never used "We Remit" [23]. The police Anti-Scam Helpline is 18222 [23].
  • Treat your payment code like cash, and report misuse at once. A confirmed payment is irrevocable. Until you report unauthorised use, the operator is not liable for it [3].
