Overview

BLIK is Poland's dominant national mobile payment system, launched on 9 February 2015 by Polski Standard Płatności (PSP) — a payment-services company jointly owned by six of Poland's largest banks 1, 2. BLIK's primary identifier is a 6-digit one-time code generated in the user's mobile banking app, valid for 2 minutes, that the payer enters at a payment terminal, ATM, e-commerce checkout, or in a P2P transfer 1, 3. A QR code variant exists for in-store scanning Poland report — though the 6-digit-code paradigm is what defined BLIK and remains the dominant interaction model.

By 2024 BLIK had ~17 million active users (out of Poland's ~38M population — ≈ 45% penetration) and processed 2.4 billion transactions worth ~PLN 350 billion (~€80B) Poland report. Settlement uses Poland's domestic instant payment rail (Express Elixir, operated by KIR), one of the earliest pan-European instant payment systems (launched 2012, second in Europe after the UK's Faster Payments) Poland report, 4.

History

Background (2012–2014): Poland's payment landscape in the early 2010s was bank-app-fragmented — each bank had its own mobile payment scheme with no interoperability. Six competing Polish banks recognised that the only path to mass-market mobile payment was a shared standard, and began collaborating on what became BLIK 1, 5.

Founding banks 1, Poland report:

  • PKO Bank Polski
  • Alior Bank
  • Bank Millennium
  • ING Bank Śląski
  • Bank Zachodni WBK (now Santander Bank Polska)
  • mBank

February 2015 launch: Polski Standard Płatności (PSP) launched BLIK on 9 February 2015, with all six founding banks integrating the 6-digit-code mechanism into their mobile banking apps simultaneously 1, 3. PSP was structured as an industry consortium with the founding banks as shareholders 2.

Adoption timeline Poland report, 3:

  • 2015 — Launch with 6 banks.
  • 2016–2019 — Expansion to other Polish banks; addition of e-commerce checkout, ATM withdrawal, P2P transfer flows.
  • ~2019 — BLIK Cheque feature (shareable payment links/QR codes).
  • 2020–2022 — Mastercard partnership for NFC contactless payments under BLIK branding.
  • 2024 — Crossed 17M active users and 2.4B annual transactions.
  • 2024+ — Testing expansion to Romania as a step toward European footprint.

Revolut becomes first foreign fintech to integrate BLIK (November 2024) [revolut-ref] — a notable industry milestone for a national payment system to expand its issuer base beyond domestic banks.

Technical specification

BLIK is unusual among national payment systems in that its primary identifier is a 6-digit numeric code rather than a QR or NFC payload 1, 3.

6-digit code mechanism 1, 3:

Property Value
Format 6 numeric digits (e.g. 123 456)
Validity 120 seconds (2 minutes)
One-time use Each code consumed by single transaction
Generation User opens mobile banking app, requests a BLIK code
Authentication Confirmation step in the originating bank app for each transaction
Channels E-commerce checkout, POS terminal, ATM, P2P

The 6-digit code is per-transaction, not per-user. The user generates a fresh code each time, the recipient (merchant, ATM, P2P recipient) sends that code to PSP for routing back to the user's bank, the user confirms the transaction in-app, and settlement happens through Express Elixir 1, Poland report.

BLIK QR code (secondary) Poland report:

  • Payment terminals (or merchants) display a QR.
  • Customer scans with their banking app camera.
  • Payment details (amount, merchant) auto-populate.
  • Customer confirms in-app.
  • No 6-digit code entry needed (the QR carries the equivalent routing data).

BLIK Cheque (newer) Poland report:

  • Generates a shareable payment link or QR code.
  • Recipient redeems the link via their banking app.
  • Used for refunds, rebates, prizes, or gift-style transfers.

Mastercard NFC integration (2020+): BLIK can be used as the funding source for tokenised cards on Mastercard's contactless rail, extending BLIK to NFC-capable Polish POS terminals without the consumer needing to enter a code Poland report.

Settlement Poland report, 4:

  • Inter-bank routing handled by PSP.
  • Settlement via Express Elixir (operated by KIR, Poland's clearing house since 2012).
  • Express Elixir uses SORBNET2 (Polish RTGS, operated by NBP) for final settlement.
  • Maximum Express Elixir transaction: PLN 100,000 (~€23K).

Use cases

BLIK is unusually multi-channel — the same 6-digit code paradigm works across every payment context Poland report:

  • E-commerce checkout — at checkout, select BLIK as payment method, get a code from your banking app, enter the code, confirm. This is the largest single use case by transaction count; BLIK is the dominant online payment method in Poland 3.
  • In-store POS — enter the 6-digit BLIK code on the payment terminal, or scan a QR code on the terminal. NFC contactless via Mastercard partnership.
  • ATM withdrawal — cardless cash: enter BLIK code on ATM, confirm in app, receive cash. Particularly useful for travellers without their card or for kids whose parents send them an ATM code Poland report.
  • P2P transfers — send money using the recipient's phone number; recipient receives via BLIK in their own bank app, regardless of which bank either party uses Poland report.
  • BLIK Cheque — shareable payment link or QR for refunds, gifts, prizes; recipient claims independently Poland report.
  • Bill payments — utility and subscription billers accept BLIK as a checkout method.

Channel distribution (2024) Poland report:

  • Total transactions: 2.4 billion
  • Total value: PLN 350 billion (~€80 billion)
  • Active users: 17 million
  • Most-used channel: e-commerce (large majority of transaction count)

Implementations

BLIK is implemented inside Polish bank mobile apps directly — there is no significant open-source library ecosystem because the cryptographic 6-digit-code generation and the in-app confirmation flow require integration with PSP's API, which is restricted to PSP-authorised institutions (mostly Polish banks) 1.

Production bank apps (canonical implementations) Poland report:

  • iPKO / IKO (PKO BP)
  • PeoPay (Bank Pekao)
  • Santander mobile (Santander Bank Polska)
  • Moje ING (ING Bank Śląski)
  • mBank mobile (mBank)
  • Millennium (Bank Millennium)
  • GOmobile (BNP Paribas Bank Polska)
  • Alior Mobile (Alior Bank)

Plus most other Polish bank mobile apps — coverage is essentially universal among Polish banks Poland report.

Foreign fintech integrations:

  • Revolut (Polish entity) — first foreign fintech to integrate BLIK, November 2024. Revolut customers in Poland can generate and pay with BLIK codes directly in the Revolut app [revolut-ref].

Merchant / acquirer SDKs: PayU Poland and other Polish payment processors offer BLIK as a checkout method via their checkout APIs 6. International payment-platform support (Adyen, Stripe, Mollie etc.) for BLIK has grown alongside Poland's e-commerce market.

The open-source library scarcity is structural — PSP gates the BLIK protocol; you integrate as an authorised acquirer or via a PSP-licensed PSP, not by building from scratch.

Comparison

vs. national mobile QR standards (SGQR, DuitNow QR, PromptPay QR, QRIS, Pix) — These are all QR-first (and EMVCo MPM TLV based). BLIK is code-first (6-digit) with QR as a secondary channel. The 6-digit code approach has the advantage of working across e-commerce, POS, ATM, P2P with one mechanism — but is less merchant-acceptance-friendly (no printed sticker for the smallest vendors) and isn't natively cross-border Poland report.

vs. Swish QR (Sweden) — Closest peer: both are bank-consortium-founded national mobile payment systems, both succeeded by cross-bank collaboration where individual bank apps would have failed. Swish is QR + phone-number paradigm; BLIK is 6-digit-code + QR. Both achieved 70 %+ adult-population adoption in their home market within a decade Sweden report, Poland report.

vs. TWINT (Switzerland) — Switzerland's TWINT is also a bank-consortium mobile payment system, also QR-based. TWINT has ~60 bank-specific app versions; BLIK has one PSP-operated system that banks integrate. Both achieved dominant national position Switzerland report, Poland report.

vs. card networks (Visa, Mastercard) — In Poland, BLIK has competed with card networks for e-commerce share specifically: BLIK's frictionless flow (open app → get code → confirm) is faster than entering 16-digit card numbers and a CVC. For in-store POS, contactless cards (and BLIK's own Mastercard-NFC integration) still dominate Poland report.

Fun facts

BLIK was founded by six Polish banks that compete with each other on every other dimension 1. The PSP joint venture is one of the better-known examples of competing banks collaborating to create critical national infrastructure — comparable to Sweden's Swish (six founding banks) and Switzerland's TWINT (multiple cantonal and national banks). Without inter-bank cooperation, a Polish mobile payment standard wouldn't have reached critical mass 5.

Express Elixir, the rail BLIK settles on, was the second instant payment system in Europe — launched by KIR in 2012, only behind the UK's Faster Payments (2008) Poland report, 4. Poland's early instant-payment infrastructure was a precondition for BLIK's success: the 6-digit-code flow needs sub-second routing and settlement.

The 6-digit code paradigm itself is unusual — most national payment systems gravitated to QR scanning because it eliminates manual entry. BLIK chose codes because they work for legacy POS terminals (no scanner needed), for e-commerce on desktop browsers (no phone-to-screen camera dance), for ATM cardless cash withdrawal (where there's no QR display), and for over-the-phone payments. The trade-off (typing six digits vs scanning) is small enough that the universality wins 1, Poland report.

In November 2024 Revolut became the first foreign fintech to integrate BLIK [revolut-ref] — signalling BLIK's transition from "Polish bank-consortium standard" toward "European mobile payment infrastructure." BLIK is also testing in Romania as a step toward Central European expansion Poland report.

Status

Active and growing fast. Most recent metrics Poland report:

  • 17 million active users (~45 % of Polish population, ~60 % of working-age adults)
  • 2.4 billion transactions in 2024
  • PLN 350 billion in transaction value (~€80B)
  • Universal bank coverage in Poland
  • First foreign fintech integration (Revolut, Nov 2024)
  • Romania pilot underway
  • Mastercard NFC partnership operational

No deprecation planned. PSP and BLIK are positioning the system as exportable infrastructure — the Polish playbook (bank consortium + 6-digit-code + cross-channel + instant-settlement rail) is being considered for similar national rollouts in other Central European countries Poland report.

The fact that Poland is non-Eurozone (PLN currency) keeps BLIK structurally distinct from EUR-denominated EPC QR / Stuzza / SEPA QR efforts — they serve different rails Poland report.
