Overview

A Spotify Code is a proprietary, scannable visual tag that links to any item addressable by a Spotify URI — a song, album, artist, playlist, profile, or branded page. Visually it is unlike a QR code: it consists of the Spotify wordmark/logo followed by a row of vertical bars of varying height that resemble an audio waveform 14. Codes are decoded by the camera built into the Spotify mobile app's Search tab; once recognized, the app jumps directly to the linked content 2.

History

Spotify introduced Spotify Codes in May 2017, rolling the feature out globally across Android and iOS at a time when the service had more than 50 million paid subscribers 36. The stated goal was to reduce friction in sharing music — replacing the multi-step process of copying and sending a link with a single scannable symbol that could be passed over social media, text, or printed on physical media such as flyers and billboards 3. The feature remains active and officially supported as of 2025 2.

Technical specification

Spotify has never published a formal specification; the following is drawn from third-party reverse-engineering analysis 4:

  • A Spotify Code contains 23 bars total. The first and last bars act as start/stop markers, and a central bar serves as a reference axis against which the other bars' heights are measured 4.
  • Each data bar encodes a height value of 0–7 (8 levels = 3 bits), measured from the axis and rounded to the nearest step. Heights are mapped with Gray code rather than plain binary so that a one-step misread changes only one bit 4.
  • Excluding the fixed markers, the 20 remaining bars carry 60 raw bits. After forward error correction (a Viterbi/convolutional decoder), this resolves to 45 bits: 37 bits of media reference plus 8 bits of checksum 4.
  • The 37-bit media reference corresponds to a 22-character alphanumeric lookup token ([A-Za-z0-9]), which the client resolves to a full spotify:<type>:<id> URI 4.
  • The Spotify logo at the head of the code helps the scanner locate and orient the machine-readable region 4.

Codes are rendered through Spotify's image service (scannables.scdn.co) and via the consumer generator at spotifycodes.com, where users paste a Spotify URI and customize bar color, background, and size 12.

Use cases

  • Instant in-app sharing of songs, albums, playlists, artists, and profiles between users 3.
  • Print and out-of-home marketing: codes appear on flyers, billboards, posters, merchandise, and product packaging to drive listeners to specific tracks or branded playlists 35.
  • Branded/promotional pages for artists and labels 2.

Implementations

There is no official open-source Spotify Code encoder. Generation is performed only by Spotify's own services: the spotifycodes.com web tool and the scannables.scdn.co image endpoint 12. Decoding is restricted to the official Spotify app camera. Several unofficial libraries replicate the format based on the reverse-engineering work cited above, but none are endorsed by Spotify.

Comparison

Compared with a generic QR code, a Spotify Code is far lower in data capacity (it carries only a ~37-bit reference token, not arbitrary data) and is single-purpose, but it is visually distinctive and on-brand, which is the principal reason Spotify built a proprietary symbology rather than using QR. The waveform aesthetic doubles as a recognizable "this plays music" affordance, and the short media-reference design keeps codes compact and printable at small sizes 4. The trade-off is total dependence on Spotify's lookup service and app for resolution.

Fun facts

  • The 22-character / 37-bit reference space allows on the order of 10^39 distinct codes, vastly more than Spotify's catalog will ever need 4.
  • Reverse engineers found Spotify applies bit-shuffling so that consecutive logical bits are spread across non-adjacent bars, improving robustness of the error-correction stage 4.

Status

Active. Officially supported and documented by Spotify as of 2025, scannable via the Spotify app's Search camera and generable through spotifycodes.com 2.
