Overview

FIK (Fælles Indbetalingskort, "common payment slip"; also FI-kort) is the Danish payment-slip standard of Det Fælles IndbetalingsSystem, in which a creditor sends the debtor a pre-printed slip whose machine-readable OCR line carries a card-type code, an optional payment ID and an 8-digit creditor number, e.g. +71<000000000123455+80882939< 112. The OCR line is printed in OCR-B size 1 and is read optically at the collecting institution, typed into online banking, or photographed by mobile banking apps 167. FI-kort use card types 71, 73 and 75; the older girokort family it modernises uses card types 01, 04 and 15 6.

History

  • The girokort traces back to the Austro-Hungarian and German postal cheque system; Danish postal giro started on 1 January 1920 and was run by Postgiro (later GiroBank, then BG Bank) until Danske Bank took over most of the operation in 2007 6.
  • Det Fælles IndbetalingsSystem was "developed jointly by the banks and PBS A/S" 1. PBS A/S (Ballerup) published the form-production handbooks and ran the voluntary FI form-approval service ("FI-godkendelse"), including issuing printer numbers (bogtrykkernummer) 1.
  • Danske Bank's FIK terms dated December 2002 already offered the three card types 71, 73 and 75 4; the current PBS technical handbooks for +71, +73 and +75 are dated August 2009 123.
  • 15 December 2010: Danske Bank added a feature to its Mobilbank app (iPhone and Android) to pay a slip by photographing it; the numbers were recognised and verified on a Danske Bank server before the user entered amount and date 8.
  • In March 2021 Mastercard completed the €2.85 billion purchase of Nets' account-to-account business, including Betalingsservice in Denmark 10. The sources consulted do not state whether FI-kort processing was part of that transfer.

Technical specification

OCR line ("læselinje")

The read line sits in the bottom field (læsezone, 5/6 in = 21.16 mm high) of the slip's main part, 2/6 in (8.46 mm) above the bottom edge of the zone 1. It is divided into 58 positions of 1/10 in; positions 1–3 and 34–58 are blank margin and the rest form three fields 1:

Position Content
4 +
5–6 card-type code (kortartkode), e.g. 71
7 <
8–23 (field 2) payment ID (betalingsidentifikation) — 16 positions
24 +
25–32 (field 1) 8-digit creditor number (kreditornummer)
33 <

General layout: +KK<PPPP…P+CCCCCCCC< 112.

  • Font: OCR-B size 1, digits 0–9 plus the graphic characters < and +; only original slips can be processed 1.
  • Ink: the whole OCR line and the navigation marks must be printed in full-coverage deep black; stroke width 0.35 mm 1.
  • Card-type code: surrounded by + and <; it identifies the form type and the processing routine 1.
  • Creditor number: a unique 8-digit ID assigned by the creditor's bank; it does not reveal which bank holds the account, so a creditor can switch banks without changing it 1. Danish OIOUBL invoice validation requires it to be exactly 8 characters when payment means code 93 (FIK) is used, with the payment account ID starting 71#, 73# or 75# 11.
  • Form formats: FIK751, FIK752, FIK7531, FIK7532 (manual vs. machine-filled amount); slip width 99.0–105.0 mm × 210 mm or 198.0–210.0 × 148 mm 1.

Card types

Card Family Payment ID in OCR line Message to payee Notes
+71 FI-kort 15 digits (14 + check digit) No Allows automatic posting; the most common type 146
+73 FI-kort None Yes Message on slip; online banking allows 41 lines × 35 chars; manual posting only 24
+75 FI-kort 16 digits (15 + check digit) Yes Combination of 71 and 73 346
+01 Girokort None Yes (minimum 1 line) Giro account number instead of FI creditor number 513
+04 Girokort 16 digits No Described as the most used girokort type 613
+15 Girokort Up to 19-digit payer ID field — Accepted in bank payment files together with 01 and 04 5

Spar Nord's corporate payment-file format (KASEL) shows the field sizes banks accept: girokort records carry a 10-digit giro number, a 2-digit card type (only 01, 04, 15) and a 19-digit payer ID; FI records carry an 8-digit FI number, card type 71/73/75, and a payer ID of 15 digits (71) or 16 digits (75) 5.

Check digits

  • Payment ID (71 and 75): the last digit is a modulus-10 check digit: weights 2, 1, 2, 1 … from the rightmost data digit; two-digit products are reduced to their digit sum; the check digit is 10 minus the remainder of the total mod 10 (0 if the remainder is 0) 13. This is the Luhn algorithm, which Odoo's implementation calls directly 1214. Microsoft's implementation uses the weight string 12121212121212 for +71 and 212121212121212 for +04 15.
  • Pre-printed amount (73, 75): if the amount is pre-printed, two check digits computed with ISO 7064 MOD 97-10 can be printed in positions 29–30 of the amount line 23.

Worked example

Computed here with the rules above (not quoted from a source): payment ID 00000000012345 (14 digits) + Luhn check digit 5, creditor 80882939 (the creditor number on the PBS sample slip 2) gives +71<000000000123455+80882939<. The example +71<022646321691221+88655702< quoted in one explainer 12 does not pass the modulus-10 rule above (the computed check digit is 6), so it should not be used as test data.

Use cases

  • Invoices and bills: creditors enclose the slip with an invoice; the debtor can pay at a bank or post office, or transfer from their own account through online banking 16.
  • Online and mobile banking: in Danske eBanking the user selects "Pay indbetalingskort" and types the fields; in Danske Mobile Banking the user can "scan or enter the information on the payment form" 7. Lunar Business in Denmark offers "scan and pay" from a photo of the bill 9.
  • Accounts-receivable reconciliation: ERP systems generate the +71/+75 string on outgoing invoices and match incoming payments by payment ID (Odoo, Microsoft Dynamics 365 Business Central) 131415.
  • E-invoicing: Danish OIOUBL invoices carry FIK details as payment means code 93 11.
  • Corporate bulk payments: bank payment files have dedicated FI and girokort record types 5.

Implementations

No dedicated, standalone FIK library with ≥10 stars was found on GitHub. FIK support lives inside ERP localisations:

  • odoo/odoo — l10n_dk_fik — Python, ~54.9k stars (repository), module last changed 2026-09. Adds "Denmark FIK Number (+71)" and "(+75)" invoice reference models; pads the invoice number to 14 or 15 digits, appends a Luhn check digit (python-stdnum) and emits +{type}<{payment_id}{check}+{creditor}<; validates an 8-digit creditor number 14.
  • microsoft/BCApps — src/Apps/DK/FIK — AL, ~692 stars, last changed 2026-09. Business Central's Danish FIK app: generates the +71 string, validates payment references for FIK 71 (≤15 digits) and FIK 04 (16 digits), and imports FIK payment files for bank reconciliation 15. Supported combinations per Microsoft's documentation: 01, 04, 71, 73 13.
  • Uniconta/Uniconta-Pages — C#, 28 stars, last pushed 2026-05. Open source pages of the Uniconta ERP, including creditor-payment export formats for Danish banks (BEC, SDC, Nordea) with FIK transaction classes 18.

Comparison

  • FIK vs. KID (Norwegian payment reference) (Norway) and Swedish OCR numbers: all three attach a customer/invoice reference to a domestic payment so the payee can reconcile automatically 12. FIK also puts a card type and the creditor number into the same printed line, so a single typed or scanned line identifies both payee and payment 1.
  • FIK vs. RF Creditor Reference (ISO 11649): the RF reference (ISO 11649, introduced end of 2008) is an alphanumeric string of up to 25 characters starting with RF and two check digits, used for the same automatic-matching purpose across borders 17. FIK is numeric only, uses a modulus-10 check digit and only works within the Danish system 1. Choose RF for cross-border or SEPA invoices; FIK for domestic DKK collection through Danish banks.
  • FIK vs. EPC QR / Stuzza: the EPC QR code (European Payments Council guidelines, February 2013) is a 2D barcode for a euro credit transfer 16. FIK is a printed OCR text line rather than a barcode, and Denmark's domestic mobile QR payments run through MobilePay/Vipps QR instead.

Fun facts

  • The OCR line is laid out on an imperial grid (positions of 1/10 inch, a 5/6-inch reading zone) while the slip itself follows the metric A-series paper formats (Dansk Standard DS 910 and 912) 13.
  • Any slip a creditor prints themselves has to carry a printer number issued by PBS, and the handbook warns that poor print quality can mean the money cannot be placed or a fault fee is charged 14.

Status

Active. A May 2026 Danish accounting glossary still describes FI-kort as "the modern version of a girokort" and walks through paying card types 01, 04, 15, 71, 73 and 75 in online banking 6. Danske Bank's current help pages support typing or scanning a payment form 7, and Odoo and Microsoft Business Central both changed their FIK modules in September 2026 1415. No successor standard was identified.
