Overview

isybank is the app-only digital bank of Intesa Sanpaolo, Italy's largest banking group. It launched on 15 June 2023 and had about 1.2 million customers at 30 June 2026 [1](https://group.intesasanpaolo.com/en/newsroom/press-releases/2023/06/intesa-sanpaolo-presents-isybank--the-group-s-new-digital-bank) [4](https://group.intesasanpaolo.com/it/investor-relations/comunicati-stampa-price-sensitive/2026/07/20260729-ris-1h26-it). Customers pay from the isybank app with BANCOMAT Pay (phone-number transfers and QR payments in shops), a digital debit card in Apple Pay, Google Pay and Samsung Pay, and free SEPA instant transfers [6](https://www.isybank.com/it/carte/pagamenti-digitali.html) [18](https://www.isybank.com/it/). History

  • 2014: Intesa Sanpaolo redesigned its website and mobile banking apps [1](https://group.intesasanpaolo.com/en/newsroom/press-releases/2023/06/intesa-sanpaolo-presents-isybank--the-group-s-new-digital-bank). Apple's store gives 4 February 2013 as the first release date of the Intesa Sanpaolo Mobile iPhone app [13](https://itunes.apple.com/lookup?id=597360475&country=it).
  • 15 June 2023: isybank launches. Intesa presented isybank in Milan as a key project of its 2022–2025 Business Plan, and the app went live the same day on iOS and Android. The bank planned €650 million of investment in it over the plan and aimed it at "the four million Intesa Sanpaolo customers who already do not use branches". Its platform was to use Vault, the core banking engine of Thought Machine, a UK firm in which Intesa took a £40 million stake [1](https://group.intesasanpaolo.com/en/newsroom/press-releases/2023/06/intesa-sanpaolo-presents-isybank--the-group-s-new-digital-bank).
  • October 2023: moving customers. Intesa began to transfer about 2.5 million of its customers' accounts to isybank in phases: 300,000 from October, then more than two million due by March 2024 [8](https://www.ilpost.it/2024/06/13/antitrust-chiuso-istruttoria-intesa-sanpaolo-isybank/).
  • November 2023: the Antitrust steps in. Italy's competition and consumer authority (AGCM) opened an investigation and blocked the transfers. It found that moved customers would lose branch and PC internet banking access, face different fees and lose services such as virtual cards and cheques [8](https://www.ilpost.it/2024/06/13/antitrust-chiuso-istruttoria-intesa-sanpaolo-isybank/).
  • June 2024: case closed. The AGCM closed the case without measures after Intesa sent new notices between January and March 2024. Customers already moved could return to Intesa Sanpaolo until 31 December 2026 and get their old IBAN back [8](https://www.ilpost.it/2024/06/13/antitrust-chiuso-istruttoria-intesa-sanpaolo-isybank/).
  • 4 October 2024: isybank added isySalvadanaio, a savings pot that can collect round-ups. The bank said its app was then the most downloaded free app on Italy's App Store [2](https://group.intesasanpaolo.com/en/newsroom/press-releases/2024/10/isybank-is-the-most-downloaded-app-on-the-app-store-and-promotes).
  • 13 November 2024: BANCOMAT, Bizum and MB WAY made their first live payments between each other's users. Intesa Sanpaolo was the Italian bank building the infrastructure with BANCOMAT [12](https://bancomat.it/en/press-releases/bancomat-bizum-mbway-instant-transactions-launch).
  • March 2026: privacy fine. The Garante, Italy's data-protection authority, fined Intesa Sanpaolo €17.6 million over the data of about 2.4 million customers whose accounts were moved automatically. It found that the bank had selected them by profiling (under 65, regular digital users, no investment products, small balances) «senza un’idonea base giuridica», without a proper legal basis [9](https://www.ilpost.it/2026/03/13/garante-privacy-sanziona-intesa-sanpaolo-isybank/).

  • BANCOMAT Pay (full): send money in real time to contacts by phone number and pay in shops that take BANCOMAT Pay [14](https://itunes.apple.com/lookup?id=1666218772&country=it). Intesa Sanpaolo Mobile. The app also works for people without an Intesa account. It handles domestic, foreign and instant transfers, card limits and geocontrol, and BANCOMAT Pay in shops and between people.
