Overview
QNB Egypt is the Egyptian subsidiary of Qatar's QNB Group. It was called Qatar National Bank Al Ahli (QNB Al Ahli) until June 2024, when it took the group's name [1](https://english.mubasher.info/news/4305811/QNB-Alahli-Egypt-rebrands-to-QNB/). Its customers pay through three apps:
- QNB Egypt Mobile Banking, the main banking app;
- QNB Egypt E-Wallet, a mobile wallet on the national Meeza Digital network that pays shops by Meeza QR code [6](https://web.archive.org/web/20250206190117/https://www.qnb.com.eg/sites/qnb/qnbegypt/page/en/enalahliewallet.html);
- QNB bebasata, a digital account opened from the phone.
The bank was one of the first on Egypt's InstaPay network in March 2022 [12](https://egyptianstreets.com/2022/03/27/egyptians-can-now-transfer-money-instantly-with-the-central-bank-of-egypts-new-app/). Its cards have worked in Apple Pay since October 2025 [9](https://www.bankygate.com/65847). Forbes Middle East credits it with over 1.88 million active customers and 235 branches [3](https://www.forbesmiddleeast.com/lists/egypts-top-50-listed-companies-2025/qnb-egypt/).
This is a bank-app biography. The group's Qatari products are covered in QNB.
History
- April 1978: the bank is established. Forbes Middle East dates QNB Egypt from April 1978 [3](https://www.forbesmiddleeast.com/lists/egypts-top-50-listed-companies-2025/qnb-egypt/). The bank QNB bought in 2013 was National Société Générale Bank (NSGB), the Egyptian subsidiary of Société Générale [2](https://en.amwalalghad.com/?p=17144).
- March 2013: QNB buys Société Générale's 77.17% stake for $2.56 billion. A mandatory tender offer then adds 19.95% from other shareholders, at EGP 38.65 a share or EGP 17.142 billion in total. That takes QNB to 97.12% of what Amwal Al Ghad called "the second largest private bank in Egypt", with 160 branches and more than 4,500 employees [2](https://en.amwalalghad.com/?p=17144). The bank then trades as QNB Al Ahli.
- March 2017: the QNB Egypt Mobile Banking app is first released on the App Store (release date 8 March 2017) [13](https://apps.apple.com/eg/app/qnb-egypt-mobile-banking/id1090888677).
- September 2017: the E-Wallet app follows (release date 20 September 2017) [14](https://apps.apple.com/eg/app/qnb-egypt-e-wallet/id1276086624).
- March 2022: the Central Bank of Egypt launches InstaPay and the Instant Payment Network, with QNB Al Ahli among the banks supporting it [12](https://egyptianstreets.com/2022/03/27/egyptians-can-now-transfer-money-instantly-with-the-central-bank-of-egypts-new-app/).
- February 2023: QNB bebasata, a phone-opened account app, goes live on the App Store (release date 4 February 2023) [15](https://apps.apple.com/eg/app/qnb-bebasata/id6444786753).
- 24 June 2024: QNB Al Ahli changes its name to QNB, "aligning its local brand with the parent group" [1](https://english.mubasher.info/news/4305811/QNB-Alahli-Egypt-rebrands-to-QNB/).
- 7 October 2025: QNB Group says the Central Bank of Egypt has approved a licence for ezbank, "a digital-first banking entity" [11](https://qna.org.qa/en/News-Area/News/2025-10/7/qnb-group-receives-central-bank-of-egypt-license-approval-for-a-new-digital-bank).
- 28 October 2025: QNB Egypt launches Apple Pay [9](https://www.bankygate.com/65847). Bankygate calls it the fourth bank in Egypt to do so, after the National Bank of Egypt, Banque Misr and CIB [10](https://www.bankygate.com/65852).

Technical integration
QNB Egypt Mobile Banking uses the same username and password as internet banking. Its store listing covers [13](https://apps.apple.com/eg/app/qnb-egypt-mobile-banking/id1090888677) [16](https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=eg.com.qnb.eazymobile):
- accounts and IBAN;
- card controls and instalments;
- transfers "inside and outside Egypt";
- deposits and funds;
- bill payments through Fawry across telecoms, utilities, insurance, car licensing, education and more.
Instant payments (InstaPay), full. QNB Al Ahli was among the banks supporting InstaPay at its March 2022 launch [12](https://egyptianstreets.com/2022/03/27/egyptians-can-now-transfer-money-instantly-with-the-central-bank-of-egypts-new-app/). The bebasata app also offers instant transfers "to banks in Egypt using IPN" [20](https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.qnbalahli.bebasata).
QNB Egypt E-Wallet (Meeza QR), full. The bank describes a wallet that is [6](https://web.archive.org/web/20250206190117/https://www.qnb.com.eg/sites/qnb/qnbegypt/page/en/enalahliewallet.html):
- loaded from a QNB debit card, at retailers or at any ATM showing the Meeza Digital logo;
- used to pay bills, top up phones and buy from "merchants displaying QR with Meeza digital logo";
- used to send money to any other mobile-wallet holder in Egypt, previewing the payee's name first;
- cashed out at retailers or Meeza Digital ATMs.
One phone number can hold only one wallet on Meeza Digital. A customer whose number is already linked to another wallet must unregister it first, at managewallet.meeza.eg [6](https://web.archive.org/web/20250206190117/https://www.qnb.com.eg/sites/qnb/qnbegypt/page/en/enalahliewallet.html). The QR payload itself is not published (see Meeza QR).
Merchant side. QNB's QR Package for businesses includes PAYnGO, which "enables you to accept payments from any e-wallet or via the VISA SCAN TO PAY application without cards and without POS machines" [8](https://web.archive.org/web/20250708211733/https://www.qnb.com.eg/sites/qnb/qnbegypt/page/en/enqrpackage.html). Implementations & partners
- Meeza Digital: the national wallet network the E-Wallet runs on, for QR payments, transfers to other wallets and ATM cash-out [6](https://web.archive.org/web/20250206190117/https://www.qnb.com.eg/sites/qnb/qnbegypt/page/en/enalahliewallet.html).
- Fawry: bill payments in the banking app [16](https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=eg.com.qnb.eazymobile). Fawry agents are also where E-Wallet holders cash in and out, and the app shows them on a map. Customers can also apply for the wallet at Fawry Plus branches [6](https://web.archive.org/web/20250206190117/https://www.qnb.com.eg/sites/qnb/qnbegypt/page/en/enalahliewallet.html). See Fawry.

Fun facts
- When QNB bought NSGB in 2013, Egypt's tax authorities said individual shareholders and funds that sold into the tender would pay 10% tax on their gains. Société Générale was exempt under the Egypt–France double-taxation agreement [2](https://en.amwalalghad.com/?p=17144).

All three banks were on InstaPay from the start, so the difference for a card user is timing on Apple Pay: QNB Egypt arrived about ten and a half months after the three launch banks, as the fourth bank in the market [10](https://www.bankygate.com/65852). For QR payments at shops, QNB's route is its own Meeza Digital E-Wallet [6](https://web.archive.org/web/20250206190117/https://www.qnb.com.eg/sites/qnb/qnbegypt/page/en/enalahliewallet.html).
